I have not had a muzzleloader for a few years and my last was a Savage 10-ML II, which was smokeless. My only complaint was how heavy it was so I am looking for something lighter weight this time around. What are you guys/gals using and what do you like? It seems like CVA, Traditions and T/C have some good options out but I want to hear what you all have to say first. The last time I used a modern (non-smokeless) inline blackpowder gun I think I was using Pyrodex pellets and Powerbelts or something like that. I am sure that powders have evolved since then, so what powders would you recommend? Thanks in advance!

I love my cva optima with the thumbhole stock. Every deer I’ve killed with it has dropped in its tracks. Shooting Barnes bullets and blackhorn powder. To me blackhorn burns much better and is way easier to clean.

Wanna get back into smokeless fairly cheap and normal gun weight?
Have Bestill Creations convert a CVA 45/70 to a .45 caliber smokeless.
I recently had a conversion done to a CVA Scout V2 45/70 and am in the process of shooting a few different loads to see what it likes. Luke at Arrowhead did my conversion, but someone said he doesn't do it anymore.
Will cost a couple hundred over the price of the 45/70 which can be had in the even cheaper CVA Hunter model.

The ONLY reason I bought a muzzleloader was because I could shoot smokeless and didn't have to clean it with soap/water. To me, the convenience of being able to verify POI and then not having to clean until the end of season is well worth it. Then you have the performance advantage to boot.

I think I am going to go with a CVA Optima black/SS and start with Buckhorn powder. I have done lots of research and I will start with the 250gr Hornady SST (I think) that have performed so well for me in the past.
