Trump wants to open the National Wildlife Refuge system to hunting.
Opinions?
My initial reaction is no, because the refuges are one place where game and non- game can rest, nest, multiply etc without disturbance.
I hunt, fish, and gather, but we need huntable and non-huntable areas to maintain populations and balance, and fairness to all users. I use Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming as examples. There is already ample opportunity for hunting without disturbing the refuges.
This thinking will next bring an attack on the National Parks, IMO.

Most of the refuges I know about are already open to hunting. Big Oaks is a NWR.
Generally on federal public lands (National Forests, Bureau of Land Management, etc.), the feds manage the land and the state manages the wildlife. Wildlife habitat on NFs and BLM is just one of the management goals, alongside resource production, livestock grazing, outdoor recreation, and so on. On a National Wildlife Refuge, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, wildlife habitat is the primary management goal; this does not preclude it from hunting.
If the state management agency (DNR, Fish and Game, whatever) feels that certain restrictions need to be in place on these refuges, they can institute these restrictions.
In my view, this is simply taking some wildlife management authority away from Washington D.C., and placing it in the hands of state wildlife managers where it belongs.

I agree that it should be opened back up. The game will still be managed, and with all the lands that are being lost to hunting I see it as a win-win. Plus more possibly more licenses sold, more hunting gear sold, more ## going into the wildlife coffers.
