Interesting morning, they were gobbling their heads off early. I had a group of Toms on both sides of me. The group in front for me started slowly working closer. About that time a hen came out and got right in the middle of my decoys. At first I was happy she was there until she decided to go to the gobbling toms. There were two longbeards and six jakes coming. The toms were lagging 20 yds behind the jakes. Toms at 60 yds jakes at 40. That dang hen ran straight to the longbeards, and then they all started to move away. The rest is history.

Wife and I just took our usual ride around the area at lunchtime. Just seen 2 paintbrush bearded gobblers out and about cruising along. Just in awe at the size of both birds.

I was gonna say can I hunt their bird feeder at first lol.
If northern Indiana birds are easier then I am in. These Western public forest birds can't read scripts. I'm going to have to ditch decoys and go on the sneak for them. Me and sneak don't go together in the dense under growth forest.
Unless I had a partner sit back 30-40 yds and call them in. They simply don't come all the way in. It's in there nature to just strut and look pretty and make the hen come to them in the forest. Now if it's open field edges where they can see a decoy then they will come in.

Above, I know I stated several solutions to my issue but in the heat of the moment I forgot some tricks I shoulda used my hat and make some wing flapping sounds and see if that brought him out to the open. I did go silent when I could tell he was coming closer and after I heard one gobble just inside the tree line 40 yds or so. I tried a light purr on glass behind my blind to get him to the decoy he didn't budge any closer. From where he was at there were some bushes and tall grass blocking his view I am assuming the next time I did hear him gobble seemed like 15 minutes and he had gotten farther away. Friday I will try setting in the wood line but Then probably sneak on the first bird I hear. There were several back there Sunday.

Do not try to over reason why a bird does what it does. One day he may walk away from you and the next day or even hour he may come right in. I have chased too many birds all morning to have them keep moving away when all of a sudden something clicks in that little pea brain of theirs and he struts in and puts on a show. All of the tactics you are trying are good ones and will eventually work.

My Indiana season is over. I havent been able to do anything since the first Saturday of season. The wife could have the baby any day, but is scheduled to be induced Thursday morning. Thankfully Ohio has another week past Indiana so I might be able to get out and fill my tag. My daughter and I are itching to catch some crappie though.
