She's been in a slump after killing a big one a couple years ago. So proud of her effort on this one.

It looks from the blood on the car and road that it's down. Should be easy to track. LOL

She's been in a slump after killing a big one a couple years ago. So proud of her effort on this one. Ouch Thato Ouch, that's got to hurt. Yesterday morning my neighbor across the street from the house called me to tell me that there was a dead deer in our front yard ditch next to the road. I went out and looked at it and then saw it was a female yearling. She was one of about 10 deer that live in our neighborhood. They cross the road all the time in the area where the dead deer was laying in the ditch by the road. I called IDNR and they had a CO from Vanderburgh County IN call me on the phone and he came out to look at the deer. I didn't want the meat so he called the county to come to take it away. We had company around 1 pm and they stayed until 5 pm. After they left I went out to the mailbox and noticed that the deer carcass was gone. I never saw who took the deer away but hope it was the county guys. I didn't want it smelling up the yard. The neighbor who called me did so from the town about two hours after he pulled out of his driveway that morning and went to town. Not sure why he waited so long to call me. Not sure how long the deer lay in the ditch before the neighbor saw it that morning. It could have been hit that night or that morning. Not sure when it was hit and who hit it. I called several meat processing companies and none of them were still processing deer meat. They only do that during dear season when they can set up to butcher deer meat. They don't do that when it's not deer season. Years ago I hit a deer on a highway and had to leave it as I was going to work and could not be late. It hobbled off and may have died. I'm glad your daughter is OK. The car can be repaired.

I've been on my county "road-kill" list for more than 30 years. I've seen all kinds of hits, and misses.
I've been called while the deer was still alive and kicking, and I've been called hours later, in the morning, when it was discovered in someone's yard.
It's not necessarily how long it's been dead, as much as how cold it is after the death. If the body cools quickly, the meat can be salvaged for days, or even weeks. Might sound nasty, but it's perfectly safe to eat when properly processed and cooked. It's no different than people "aging" beef.
I've actually brought home a road-kill in 50 degree weather and stored it for days in an old steel bathtub filled with ice, until I had more time to deal with it. I've not purchased beef for my freezer at home for more than 35 years. Always have venison.
Glad your daughter is o.k.

My wife got one too. Took forever for the ACPD to get there. The poor doe suffered for over an hour. I did not have the means to finish her or I would have. The coyotes had her stripped in less than a week.

I haven't bought beef in years in either. The only downfall is depending on the time of year you may have to drop some plans and get on processing it ASAP. I usually end up grinding all mine into delicious burger.
