I would agree with the predators having the populations down. Only sense I can make of what I have seen where I hunt the last couple seasons. Seems like decent populations in pockets just here and there around Parke. I hunt Northern Brown and Southern Johnson counties and there is seems to be more and more hunting pressure on what birds are left there (to close to town).

I hope to start a coon trapping project next season. Conditions on the home front wouldn't allow it this winter. I've been researching the different trap types and will probably order several dog proof traps this summer. I've had good success using commercial fish food pellets for bait, but I've heard miniature marshmallows are good too. Once, only once did I catch a non-target animal, a feral cat using the fish food. A setting tool helps me set them easier, IIRC $5.00. Duke is what I have. They work on either push or pull.

My dad used to use sardines or marshmallows in the live traps if he wanted to catch a coon for training the dogs. Of course you could catch just about anything that way though, you just release the non-target critters.
The coons and possums are just ridiculously thick at my house. I occasionally put corn out behind the house through the summer so we can watch the deer come up in the yard. I've shined a light out there before at night and had a dozen pairs of coon eyes staring back at me.
I have an uncle that is one of the few remaining coon hunters around here. He has no trouble getting on coons.

I had coons getting into my chickens and killing for fun. I put DP around the chicken house and killed 24 in 2 weeks. I now keep 5 out around chickenhouse year round

Summer before last the coons ate half my sweet corn. The neighbor and I got our live traps out and caught an old sow coon and a hole mess of half grown young ones 3 possums and two feral cats. The cats got a get out of jail card the rest weren't so lucky

Mom & Dad were having problems with their bird feeders. Caught 18 within 2 weeks. Neighbor that has chickens is always having problems. He thought catching 2 was all there was. 12 or 13 later, he thought he was done. Then I told him that I had 4 at one time on my trail cam. LOL
I'm going to give him a hand re-doing the coop and the pens this year......

My neighbor and I took out 22 and there are still need to trap many more. I will not punish someone else and relocate them. That's cruel.

I think the growing bobcat population has alot to do with the numbers being down.
