We are heading up there to stay at a state park the third week in March. Not planning on fishing , but it has crossed my mind numerous times.

A little more about Lake Erie's future.
The Ohio DNR released a report based on creel reports from last year and it states that on the average last year .04 walleye were caught per hour by fisherman.
This same report states that this years average should be .08 walleye per hour based on the 2015 hatch which those fish will now be of legal size.
To put this in perspective last year when our group fished Lake Erie we caught our limits (42-48) in approx. 3 hours on each outing. This does not include several other species of fish as well as small walleye we caught and released during that same time frame. If you want to fish Lake Erie I would strongly suggest you go with a reputable charter service and see what it's like before you haul a boat up there.
The technique we use is trolling giant off shore planner boards pulling 16 rods at one time, that means we sweep an area about 50 yards wide with 16 different baits on each pass. Sometimes we have 4-5-6 rods going off at one time and it gets real crazy. Admittedly this type of fishing is not for everyone especially if your the kind of guy that likes to hold a rod in your hand and feel the bite. When trolling we are all watching these 16 rods that are placed about the boat in rod holders. Sometimes the bite might be so slight that it takes a trained eye to see the hit and at other times the rod will get slammed so hard you can barely pull it out of the rod holder.
These trips we take are what we refer to as "a gentleman's trip" because even though we know how to dig worms, bait hooks and clean fish we don't do any of that on these trips. When we step off the boat we take a hero photo for the scrap book, then we have someone come get our catch and clean them while we go back to our rented house and enjoy a few well earned cocktails. In the evening we take about 6 pounds of fillets to an excellent local restaurant where we have it prepared in about 4-5 different ways and enjoy a great meal and even greater memories. Schall53 and I will make this trip twice this year, from the time we leave home till the time we return is under 48 hours, we always come home with a full belly and plenty of nice walleye fillets for the freezer.
One of the nice things about these trips is there is nothing to clean or put away when you get home, just throw your dirty underwear in the laundry and put your fish in the freezer.
We have a full crew for this year but if would like to join us next year and we can get enough good guys together to make a crew of 6 let one of us know.
It's almost a sure bet that barring any unforeseen disasters this Lake Erie walleye fishing is only going to get better and better over the next decade.
