Got back a couple days ago from a great weekend trip to Texas with hugedogleg (Gene). Two of my BILs and I drove down Thursday after work, got a couple hours of sleep, and met Gene and a few of his buddies for some hog hunting Friday and Saturday. Friday was fun.. Gene's dogs bayed up a medium-sized spotted boar first thing in the morning, then a big black boar at midday. We moved spots for the evening hunt and caught a big silver-colored boar. We got them all in the trailer, got them back to Gene's house, and got them skinned/quartered, and in the cooler. Saturday we went to a different spot and got into a group of hogs pretty quick. We saw a good sized sounder moving off across the creek, but the dogs had a sow bayed a hundred yards or so into the woods on our side. Since the trailer had dogs in it still, and it was a cool day, the sow was killed/gutted/loaded on top of a trailer. Next the dogs bayed another big black boar, which drug the dogs across a cold, waist deep creek. That one was loaded into the trailer live since it was emptied of dogs by then. We wound up building a fire to dry out while some dogs continued to work, then later the dogs caught and killed a little 10-pounder. When we got done hunting Saturday we had a total of 5 good sized hogs and one little feller to eat, and came back to find another dead hog at the truck that one of Gene's buddies had dropped off for us. We had initially planned to hunt Sunday, and I would have loved to, but we decided to spend the day finishing up butchering and driving home. We spent most of Monday cutting/wrapping meat, and wound up with 260#. Had some pork chops last night and they were great. I really want to thank Gene for inviting us down, it was a great time and we all enjoyed it. Everybody was friendly and welcoming, his dogs were well trained, and we got all the meat we could handle.

Nothing could be more fun than playing in the mud with dogs and pigs.

It was night and day difference between Friday and Saturday. We got wet both days but it was 65 Friday it was 42 Saturday. Long miserable day in the woods Saturday, but the guys from Indiana hung in there with us and made hands. They are welcome back anytime. Maybe next time we get the weather to cooperate.

The guys we were hunting with think they knew who lost it. They were going to take it to him. Shame he didn't get the meat but maybe he can at least get a mount of some kind out of it. For our part of the country he was a nice one for sure.

I'm kind of partial to spot and stalk bowhunting now that ive done it, but that looks like one hell of a time. It's definitely a whole lot different. The dogs work and the training that Gene and the other guys put into that are what make it all come together. It really reminded me of my childhood days tagging along 'coon hunting, the coons are just bigger and more ornery.

Looks like a fun hunt. I've found wild hog to be pretty darned good eating. Preference is one about 100#, cook whole front or hind quarters in a smoker.

That sounded like a lot of fun boar hunting. Helped reading the posts as I'm out of town in nowhere Ottawa, Illinois. Work related.

Good stuff.... what part of Texas where you at? Varmit lic. I guess? I wasn't really sure from reading the regs, sounded like you needed one in one part of the regs, you didn't in another part.. I emailed TX Parks/Wildlife, no license needed to hunt hogs on private property. We were far NE, hotel was in Texarkana and hunted in a 45 minute radius from there. About 10 hours from Bedford.

We've tried some of the sausage and pork chops, both were excellent. My wife thought the pork chops tasted like they came from the store, so I guess she approves.
We put all the meat in the same coolers for the trip home, so I don't really know what meat came from which pig. The sausage will be more or less a composite. I did keep 2 of the smaller hindquarters out for whole smoking, so they probably came from the young boar or the sow. I also kept the 10 little pounder whole, just dressed it out like a squirrel, will probably smoke it also.
