Local Traditions like that are part of what makes life worth living. Madison has a baker named Horst that is similarly beloved. Donuts to kill for.

I was just at Horst last weekend. And stop there every morning before turkey hunting. They make good stuff don't they? Horst is a hoot, and fun to talk to if you can understand him! He came to America back in the seventies with nothing and worked for another baker. He finally left after many unappreciated years and started his own shop. Now the other place is out of business and he is thriving; an American success story!

I have never talked to him. Always just the ladies out front.

Had them several times, just not impressed. But others wait in line for hours. Try DJ’s bakery in Aurora when they have hot donuts. Yummo.

I grew up in that area (batesville/oldenburg)...and they are good. But I'm not driving there, standing in line, just for a pastry!

I got "rise and roll" amish bakery here in greenwood at county line and 135. Several award winning pastries and donuts and free coffee. I cant describe how good it is.
