When a deer tests positive for CWD in Indiana and the state comes in and starts killing deer, I would imagine that will get the attention of everyone, including the naysayers...

I would like to see a study on the predators that eat the weak and dying CWD deer. Are there any tested positive predators?

I know that there are people who think that this is blown way out of proportion and I get your point about things like predators (and even people) who eat deer from areas with CWD, but when a deer tests positive and the state comes in and starts killing deer what difference will it make? There will still be a whole lot fewer deer in those areas.

I know CWD has not wiped out the cow industry or the elk industry. I'm not a nayer, just trying to filter out the noise. Look at the knee jerk reaction for the Blue Emperor Beetle. Cut all the trees down. Did that solve the issue? Is there any testing trying to save a deer with CWD? We have done that with some plants and other species. It seems after 50 years we are still learning about CWD verses solving ways to minimize and rid of CWD. Like Honey Bees. Varra mites are forever here and 100% deadly, but we have found ways to combat it. Some through chemicals and some through selective queen breeding and Drone Congregation Area (DAC) control. Remember the killer African Honey Bees. Remember how they said that it was going to wipe out the other honey bees. They found a way to coup with it and to reduce the chances of hot hives (killer bee hives). What are good practices to slow down and or stop CWD? Let's talk about that instead.

Waynes
Hopefully there will be a breakthrough in the detection and battling of CWD, but right now the only practice I've read about when a deer tests positive is eradication of deer in that area.

There was an interesting paper published a few years ago modeling outcomes of CWD in wild elk populations and how management strategies would determine outcome. From what I recall, under current management strategies (season dates/bag limits w/ current rates of infection) extirpation from the state (Colorado I believe) was all but certain. The only model which resulted in a stable herd was a drastic reduction in harvest. Again, I will comb through the catalog and see if I can find the paper.

It's sad there is a FB group pushing for citizens of Indiana to go against the DNR's will and have the state do nothing and "let nature run its course" once CWD is found in the Hoosier state... SMH

We had the big outbreak of foot and mouth over here a few years ago, obviously all the cows on the farms were slaughtered and i was involved in that. But deer wise we were not allowed to go into the forest and hunt them, i can only think the reason being that they did not want them chased around and spreading the disease. It is a completely different ball game with free ranging wild animals. Once we were allowed in i found no evidence of it in my deer although some other people said they found evidence. It is a a hard one to know what to do for the best. Billy

This is outstanding and I hope that further research continues. Unfortunately in this day and age, some politician will somehow jump on board and take credit for it.

SMH I don't know a thing about this guy, nor do I know if he's on to something or full of crap, but IMO it's always good to look @ all the information one can in situations such as these. I will say this...Even if he's right, it might save the deer in the deer farms, but I don't know how you could vaccinate wild deer in large numbers.
