Bluegills are still way too cold here, water temp is still in the mid to upper 50's.

My boy and I fished esshups pond on Saturday. He has some pretty exotic fish in there! Always a fun time. These hybrid striped bass were 19" & 22". My boy is 8yo and the bigger one fought like all heck for him. Lol. Couple of rainbow trout with unique color to them. They fight good and are really fun being able to see them in the water. My boy caught most of the fish like usual. I try to get him on the action with live bait so he doesnt get bored. Trying to keep him focused on enjoying the outdoors so he can have a clear path in life out of trouble. Seems to be working so far! I cant say thanks enough to esshup for generously letting us fish his pond.

deadeer, it was fun having you over and watching him wear his arms out. Get some new line on those rods, it'll be easier to cast with them that way. featherduster, fat fish grow fast! LOL Last September those Hybrid Striped Bass were 3#-4# and only 15"-19" so they grew a bit since then, I'd say they were close to 5# now. The Golden Rainbows will only live to the end of June if the weather holds out, and I want to have them double in size (or better) since stocking them in late October at an average of 1# each. Those Hybrid Striped Bass are hitting 3 years of age now, they were put in at 4"-6" size range in the Fall of 2016. I use a Texas Hunter feeder, and feed a mix of Optimal Bluegill and Bass food once the water temp hits low 50's in the Spring until the same temp in the Fall. I'll feed 40#-80#/month depending on how the fish are eating. I could feed more, but I don't want them dependent on the food, there are Bluegills and Golden Shiners in the pond to eat too. A neighbor had a ice fishing rod with a shiner on it yanked down the hole this winter - he put it in a rod holder and it disappeared before he could grab it. He brought his 2 year old ice fishing and the kid caught one of those trout all by himself. I have a picture of him cradling it in his arms and the fish is longer than he is wide. LOL There are 8"-14" Yellow Perch in the pond, and I'm hoping all the channel cats are gone - last one that was caught was 16# IIRC. They eat too many smaller fish and are too hard to catch. The Bluegills haven't started eating yet, and I haven't seen any Smallmouths this year (yet). The perch laid a lot of eggs this Spring, hopefully there will be some survivors. deadeer needs to bring a bigger cooler next time, they wouldn't fit in the one he brought without the tails sticking up out of the cooler.

I went back for some white bass today between the rain events. I caught 8, brought 7 home. I didn't have the fish basket ready on the first one. Seems strange, but apparently I didn't own one before this week. I can honestly say I completely understand why people wait for the big females before they hit it hard.
I did get to listen to a gobble for a short while. He probably didn't gobble 15 times before complete silence. He was on acceptable ground and I spent way too much time trying to figure out how to get in to where he was. I may have to alter plans a bit in a couple weeks and carry the shotgun along with the pole. :-)

Fished Lake Michigan again today putting in at Burns Ditch and fishing the reef and wall area to the East. It was a slow bite but we did manage 5 Coho in about 4 hours. We were running bandits behind boards and 2 flat lines with thin fins. The sky was clear and the lake was nice, it was a good day to be there.

Those are Hybrid Striped Bass, a cross between a White Bass and a Striped Bass. I stock ponds for people and I bring up most of my fish from Arkansas.

Caught a few small bass last night out of a couple new (old) ponds I tried. Couldn't get them to bite on a rubber worm or jitterbug so caught them all on a beetlespin.
Hopefully if the weather is decent this weekend I can get the canoe out here locally and try for some crappie. But.. the lawn is also needing mowed and a few other projects needing attention, so we shall see.

Went out yesterday looking for crappy or gills. Fished 3 hrs with only 2 crappy then found a spot of hungry gills. Put 33 nice gills in the boat in 1 1/2 hrs for 35 total fish. Was a nice day to be out befor the gills but the gills made it a great day.
