My neighbor asked if he could bring a buddy to fish the pond today because they tried a public lake and only caught 3 Yellow Perch about 6" all day long. They ended up catching a couple of the Golden Rainbows and around 30 Bluegills around 8" long.

Dang, that looks COLD from here. Good video and good fishing! I'm assuming a slot limit on size? I believe so but they release all their lake trout no matter.

Brian and one of his friends are hiking 3 miles into the boundary waters this weekend and stay over night in their fish house. Temps are going to get up into the teens, only -5 during the night. I told him to keep their lake trout and I’ll smoke them for him.

Itching to go. Fixing to pour some 1/32,1/24, and 1/16 oz jigs. Also picked up some #5 & #7 flicker shads for trolling for walleye at Brookville.

LOTS of snow and slush on the lakes now...to much for this old boy to go hiking through.

We had a fatal ice fishing accident on a private pond yesterday a few miles from my house here in Jasper County. Two fell through, only one made it out. Conservation recovered the second shortly after.
Please be careful out there!

Any idea of when crappie will start mauling the smaller fish? I've been wanting to take my 2 daughters, 3 and 5 out fishing with bobbers and minnows. I think they may have a good time, however the last time my 5 year old caught a small bass there was no need to reel it in, she was so scared she held onto the pole and ran away from the lake with the fish in hot pursuit. One of the funniest things I've seen.

I hit my convenient farm pond yesterday afternoon. It was mostly cloudy and 60 here. I caught 11 bass on an electric chicken crappie slider in about 20 minutes. They were all 12"-16." They odd thing to me was that they were all caught in shallow water. I started fishing deep from the dam and never got a hit. I moved to a shallow cove on the way back to the truck and it was like someone flipped a switch. The pond needs a serious culling of bass. I'd have kept them, but had parental duties.

My son is heading for Lake Superior this weekend, walking out a mile or so to fish Lakers. Hopefully have pictures to share of some fish over 30 inches.

Shallower water was warmer water. In the Spring in a local lake we'd always catch a lot of bass in the area where lily pads would be thick in summer. Dark muck bottom, shallow water, warms quickest by the sun in Spring. North side of the lake would warm faster than the South side. Fish are cold blooded, so their metabolism is higher in warmer water. Even 1/2 degree will make a difference.

Rule of thumb is approximately 20# largemouth bass per surface acre per year in private ponds to remove to keep the bass numbers in balance after year 3 of stocking the bass. If that isn't followed, it could need double or triple that number for a year or few consecutive years to get it back in balance. Good job!! Keep it up.
