Do recommend black crappies in ponds? Any crappie in a less than a few acre pond is not great due to competition with bass and gills but if a larger pond with plenty of food not sure there is a difference. Definately interested in esshup has to say

Do recommend black crappies in ponds? It depends on the size of the pond, and how much time you want to spend managing them, and your goals for the pond. If the pond is over 25 acres and has a population of Largemouth Bass, yes. A smaller pond? No. I am doing an experiment at a clients pond now. He wanted Crappie. His pond is 4 acres, has a lot of cover for fish and is 29 feet deep at the deepest point. The bass in the pond now are 14" and larger, so I stocked 200 Hybrid Crappie this Spring. He still has a tremendous forage base of Golden Shiners, and he has habitat in the pond that is conductive to their reproduction, so I think there will be enough food for them without chewing into the bass's forage base. For the usual pond owner that wants to do minimal management or fish and forget about the pond, no. How big is the pond in question, what is the cover like for the fish in the pond and what are your goals for the fishery?

3.5 acres. Structure consist of pallets, Christmas tree ever year sunk. Approximately 15 trees a year. Brush from trees around the pond thrown in around 2 foot of water. Have not put in minnows in several years due to leak in dam which was repaired recently. Going back to twice a year minnows now. More curious than anything about the crappies. Really don’t plan on stocking any.

You did well, plenty of fish for the freezer to get your family through a long winter.

You did well, plenty of fish for the freezer to get your family through a long winter. Yeah we do a group overnight trip once a year and split whatever we catch up between everyone.

Caught one real nice one 29 inches about 6 lb not sure didn’t have a scale 29” should have been a lot heavier than 6 pounds It very easily could been more maybe up to 9 or 10 lb I’m just guessing you can see what a pig it is the bigger eye beside it is right under 18 inches your only allowed one over 18 makes it looks small and it’s a nice fish

IMO there is no greater fishing photo than a steel clip stringer laying in the bottom of an old aluminum boat with a limit of inland lake Walleyes.

What a great evening to be on the water. Ended up with two wipers, a couple crappie, and a few that broke off before we could get them in. Be back at it in the morning.

Back at it again this evening. Just went through a school of wipers. One broke off on the bite, but we caught four others that hit at the same time. Also cleaned 13 crappie and have caught 5 channel cats. Here’s one:
