My beagle's been anxious to go all summer and I wish I could go but I have to wait until after deer firearms season per the land owner's request . When I was able to hunt Bill's it didn't matter, man am I going to miss to that place this year. No good deer hunting spot anymore and I'm not sure if this new spot's going to be any good for rabbits .

That's why I usually wait until after firearms season's over with,I don't want to disturb anybody,I know how it feels to getting intruded on. Too bad you didn't see any though. Annie's been dying to go so as soon as firearms season's done with I'll have to let her run some and make her happy .

Did you guys see several or just those? This is my first year rabbit hunting so I guess I don't really know what to expect.

I've went every New Year's since 1995. This year was pretty warm. Saw 7 and shot all 4 we had opportunities on. We don't use beagles. However, we did take my dog last week. We use her for deer trailing. Turns out she's too fast and we couldn't get a shot. Went up to Starke County yesterday. Only saw 3 and took the 1 home. No other shots available. Would be cool to hunt with some well trained pups sometime.

Yeah I agree. I took a friend of mine out to my property last Tuesday. He's a rabbit hunter but, that was my first time out. He brought a dog just to see how he'd do. We both said that he was too fast and stayed too far ahead of us. We saw 3, only got one shot off but missed. We took three squirrels out if the woods though. I'll go again next week I hope but, will probably leave his dog at home.
My dad and his dad were both rabbit hunters. It was a good feeling wearing dad's old vest and shooting grandpa's old single shot 20 ga.

Rabbit population tend to run in cycles. Supposedly 7 year but not 100% sure. I do know running dogs several days a week that the numbers are on a downhill swing this year. I don't remember the spring being overly wet as that will have a negative impact on nesting success. What I'm seeing is the dogs have to work extra hard to find rabbits on all the properties we run on. My main running ground in past years they'd jump one before I got all the dogs collared up. Went out there the last two days after the snow and found maybe sign of 6 or 7 rabbits. Even the rabbit population in my running pen is down this year. We lost quite a few to warbles. Some will say it won't kill the rabbits but I'll tend to disagree. Found many in there with warbles on the neck. Read it'll only kill them if the warbles gets popped since it releases toxin into the bloodstream. My thoughts are they irritate the rabbit, the rabbit scratches, and tears the warbles. Just my opinion. Taken a couple of kids out this year and got them their first rabbits behind dogs. Work kept me from putting the time in I usually do but been getting out more lately. Most of the dogs have around 20 miles on them a week and my faster dogs I try to keep them 40 miles a week. Only caught two this year so far so they were a bit out of shape. Have one I have to run by himself or with the slower dogs. He's gotten too competitive and wants to dog run when the other gets out front. My lemon dog met his first hot deer scent the other day. I let him get excited on the scent for about 70 yards while I was cranking up the shock collar. He was convinced he wants nothing to do with a deer anymore.

I'm heading out solo tomorrow after work. I've had success by myself hunting along the edges of crop fields and woodlines. The property I'm going to tomorrow is pretty much all thicket and woods. I'm thinking it's going to be a challenge to get one as I usually hunt this place with my friend and even with the two of us we have limited success. Typically see several rabbits per hunt but roosted ain't roasted as they say.

Well I jumped three and killed zero. They either jumped up too far ahead of me or right when I was trying too untangle myself from all the vines and thorns I was walking through. Also found five fresh beds melted down to the grass underneath.

Well I finally got 1 course it was only my 2nd time out, weather hasn't been cooperating with my schedule. I need to remember to actually aim instead of just pull up and point, took me 4 shots. I aimed the last shot though.

Finally got on some rabbits today. Been pretty sparce on the other places I have ran this season. Jumped 7 today and brought 5 full circle; I missed one. My old buddy did pretty good even if it took him about half an hour on each circle. He is pretty slow; doesn't "run", barely trots.

Find you'll get to kill more rabbits with a slower dog. I tend to run fast dogs but it usually ends with the rabbit holeing up from pressure. When I run just my slower dogs the rabbit tends to stay up and run.

When I run just my slower dogs the rabbit tends to stay up and run. I don't have exclusive running rights on the properties I hunt and many of them head for holes, concrete rubble piles, and brush piles before they even make a full circle. I think they are plenty pressured by others with faster dogs.

Ran five today before the rain. Two went into the same brush pile and one holed up. These two got pushed around twice before I could get in the right position for a shot. Fun, fun, fun! Also found a small shed antler.

He and the one that passed this Spring both had a crook in the end of their tails at birth and it makes the tail look stubby and weird.
