I'm an iron sights kinda guy...
I bought a red dot to toy around with and the dot needed to come down to match my iron sights. Well adjusting down took it up and up took it down.
Is that right?
Are scopes the same way if it is right?

Yes I believe the adjustments are marked as to the direction they move point of impact. So by adjusting "down" you are moving impact down. Adjusting to the right on the turret moves point of impact to the right, and so on. Of course the dot moves the opposite direction of point of impact. Sounds like its working as it should.

If you fire a shot, and it is high of the bullseye, you should turn the dial in the "down" direction to move point of impact down.
One thing to keep in mind if you are shooting very close, is that at point blank range you're going to be 2-3" below point of aim due to the centerline of the scope sitting 2-3" above the centerline of the bore. I've made the mistake of trying to get a scope zeroed perfectly at 20 yards, thinking I'd just have to put it back out at 100 or 200 to make fine-tune adjustments, and had the rifle shooting 2 feet high at that distance.

Thanks guys, I guess that scope I got when I was 10 for my BB gun wasn't a peice of junk I just didn't know what I was doing. And here now with the red dot at 31.
