Dove fields have lit up! Had an inch of rain last night, so I am not making any sound moving through the woods, but I have yet to spot the first squirrel!

Finally got out for the first squirrel hunt of the season. Took my boy so I knew it wouldnt be a long hunt. Nasty hot and humid anyway, and had thunder rolling in the distance. Radar showed it was paralleling us, so no fear of getting caught. First hour was slow, but then things heated up. Saw 3 chasing around in a big oak. Had them in my scope several times, but they were so skinny and pathetic looking, I layed off them. After about 2 hours, the mosquitoes showed up with a vengeance, so we pulled the plug. Had a real good time with him starting out our great Labor Day holiday!

Going to miss this big white oak. Was always good for a squirrel on the way in to the woods.

Not many trees grander than a White Oak.

Hunted from 930 until noon today. Got three male red squirrels and also three pineys. Will try to get to the woods earlier tomorrow as I didn't see as much activity as I was hoping for today. Anybody use a bellows style call and have any luck getting them to bark back when they hear it?

Anybody use a bellows style call and have any luck getting them to bark back when they hear it? I have misplaced my call, but I used to use it. I used it most often when one was cutting up in the tops where I couldn't see it. They would come down the tree to see what the other squirrel was barking at and then I could get the scope on it.

Heard one cutting up in a hickory tree today but couldn't see him. Did the kiss on the back of the hand thing to make a squealing sound and shook a sapling. I hear him start barking and down the tree he comes. Put the cross hairs on his head and click...dud round saved his life. When I cycled the bolt a round got hung up so he got away. Still it was pretty cool that he literally dropped his hickory nut and came running to check out the noise. Ended up with two today.

Hunted from 9 to 1130 this morning. Ended up getting five...two females, two young males, and an old grizzled male. The small ones are so much easier to get the hide off. Was able to find them by their barking and chattering today. They were pretty vocal.

Are you guys finding any worrbles in them? Should you pitch the squirrel if found? Haven't seen any in a few years, but they just live below the skin and not in the meat. Strip the squirrel as usual and you won't be able to tell the difference between it and any other squirrel in the skillet.

Got up Saturday with the intention of going, but radar showed a BIG mass just on the edge of town so I went back to sleep. Got to admit that it was nice to sleep in!!
But I should have went anyway. Sprinkled all day long; never RAINED. Only a 1/4" of rain for all day. Had a friend that helps out a neighbor with a lot of mowing said that he saw squirrels all over the place!!
I could have taken the old 20 gauge Savage single. It is a breeze to disassemble, dry, and oil back up.

Don't need to go to the woods.....little thieves are steeling my acorns out of my pots off the back deck! I thought I had fixed that issue and put my pots in a cage....they didn't seem amused! Persistent turds.....are now chewing on the plastic and reaching in to get what they can!!!! Gonna hook a car battery with some jumper cables to this cage if they keep it up!!! GO GET YOUR OWN ACORNS!!!!!!!!!

Couldn't talk my girl into a deer hunt this morning, so I am hitting a private woods to squirrel hunt. Sit tight when you shoot one. You might just drop one right next to it!

I spent my morning in the squirrel woods, but with a chainsaw instead of a gun.
I got the last stand that the tree tried to claim down and found a spot or two to put stands not in the path of logging progress last night. This morning I opened up the new ATV trail to the new stands, cut a few shooting lanes, and looked unsuccessfully for the harness I managed to lose. I'm glad I have spares and bought the bibs with the one built in last year.
Oh, there were fresh deer tracks in the ATV trails I made yesterday. Is it cheating to make them a path to my tree? :-)

They were cutting heavy in the woods this morning from the very tops of the trees. My .410 just won't reach that high as I discovered today at first light as I tried to knock down one small grey. I was getting bombed by the black walnuts they were cutting. You know the ones that are the size of hardballs. I think I may need a helmet next time I hunt that part of the woods. I did manage to pop one that came down the side of the tree to see what the noise was about.
