I think the cables can be fine.....you just really have to inspect everything well EVERY YEAR. As much hassle as it is to bring them down and do a good once over of them it worth it. If I had done that I wouldn't have had my close call. We get lazy or in a hurry or otherwise and it can certainly bite you later. I have considered trying to find a way to use chain VS the ratchet straps as well for even holding the stand to the tree, but I have not been able to find a means to easily keep it tight....so instead I replace straps every few years..... We use a turnbuckle on the chain around the tree, or a small chain binder. I'll have to give those options a look......how heavy a chain you use? Do you use any sort of "cover" on the chain?

I use a turnbuckle and 1/4" chain. No cover on the chain. I like the small chain binder idea. Much quicker to use and can be adjusted faster than a turnbuckle if it isn't tight enough. You can leave some chain hanging and use a lock to lock the chain around the stand, effectively locking the stand to the tree.
