Thanks. My best friend is a beekeeper. He is helping me. DannyG bees. I've read two books and watched many youtube videos. My guess over 40 of them. Typical engineer study of detail. My wife thinks I'm nuts.

Good news. For Christmas I'm expanding to two hives. One set of bees (package) from local supplier and the 2nd a set of bees (nuc) from Northern Georgia. Eastern/Carolina bees and second hive (Eastern). Jumping in with both feet.

I have a friend that grew up raising bees in northern Indiana. He now lives down here, and his parents and bees are still up north. We were going to bring down some hives and bees and start raising bees down here a few years ago, but that was the year the polar vortex came through and all most all of his queens died...so we never got started. It may be something I revisit. The Mooresville library isn't very far from me...

I'm not sure how soon it will be though. My friend that used to raise bees just cut the tip of one of his fingers off in a miter accident. Ouch!!! I told him he is going to look like one of the old farmers that stuck his hand in a hay bailer to unjam it.

6 1/2 hour class yesterday was very good. Instructor Cory is nuts , but fun. Bees didn't bother me at all. Don't know why I waited so many years.

I was lucky Saturday. I was the 1st to pull out a middle frame so the bees were not flying much. Temp was only 45 so still lame.

Just received 50 un-assembled deep hive frames. Productive time during the nasty winter evenings. Plan on assembling them during the times I can't work outside. I'm also making my own beehive boxes. I think it's crazy buying them.

Learned bee stuff today. Saint Vanetine is the patron saint of beekeepers.

I have 50 acres that abut the old Wabash-Erie canal. There are areas very close to my property that are perpetually underwater. This is the bed of the old canal. Cat-tails, reeds...and other swampy plants. Would bee hives fare o.k. in an area like this? My 50 acres is full of honeysuckle, blackberry, maple, some mulberry...typical Indiana woods.

Yes,if stay dry. Plenty of trees and wild flowers for bees in the ohio valley. Yes, about 35-40 acres stay dry, maybe a little more. I gave this a passing thought a year ago but never pursued things. Another consideration, my property is an hour away from my home, so I don't get down there as often as I'd like. Usually once or twice a month, and I have no electrical power there. Would a hive or two, or twelve... be a lot of maintenance?

Yes for the most part. 3 main enemies, varro mites, hive beetles, a wax moths. Most keepers check hives every 2 to 4 weeks. You could check in spring and fall. Should be able to miss a few summer months. Beekeeping is expensive. Hive parts add up fast. If wood handy you can make your hive parts. Bees range from $130 to $200.
