Everyone applying for CO this fall remember there is a new computer system, applications MUST be done electronically this year and- the good news- you don't have to pay on the front end and wait on refunds anymore. Best of luck to everyone, the application portion of the website opens March 1!!

There was a mistake with mine, I had to call in to get it resolved. Somehow I had 2 different identities in their system.
They got it fixed pretty quick, but anybody applying better check early in case they run in to similar issues..

its been a minute since I last looked at CO application process. What are the costs to apply for a PP and is the deadline still the first few days into April? I probably should apply to keep my Elk PP's active.

Last time out we passed through the East side of Colorado Springs on our way to Nucla. We took the way my Dad went back in 1970 on 50 through some cool and beautiful places like Gunnison, Black Canyon of the Gunnison and the Blue Mesa Reservoir, ended up staying the night in Montrose before we made it to Nucla. Anyhoo...Colorado Springs is one busy place!

It is a great place to live....good schools, low taxes, reasonable cost of living and plenty of jobs. Since I have to live in a city until the last one is out of the house this is about as good as I could hope for. Oh, and a LOT of good breweries

I have a client that has a place in Montrose and he keeps bugging me to come out there for late Archery Elk. I have been to Montrose hunting cow elk before during the late "cow only" season, and it's a nice area. I walked around in Black Canyon of the Gunnison for a few days to get used to the elevation.
It looks like I will be applying for a Mule Deer license in area 44 this year, and I will call them and see if I can buy an over the counter bull elk tag before the season starts "just in case". My cousin hunts in that area every year and said I should go apply for a tag. I have plenty of preference points, so..........
I will be working my butt off this year to get in shape. He said elevation is between 9,500 and 10,000 feet so this flatlander needs to work out!! I'll be spending more time at the range getting the rifle dialed in too, I have to see if it prefers 180g, 195g or 200g bullets. All shots will be downhill, between 30° and 45°, so that's one more variable to take into consideration.

That is about the same elevation as our yearly camp. Elevation is no joke, as you know. You can pick up elk OTC licenses for archery through 3rd season for that unit. Last year deer licenses were drawn out at the following levels for that unit.....2nd season-2 pts, 3rd season-13 pts and 4th season- 17pts. I would also suggest that you confirm your zero once you get out here too as elevation can have some effect on your POI. Best of luck!!!

I just talked to the CPW main office, the Glenwood office and Officer Craig who is out of that Glenwood office. He said the deer are doing very well and they should make it thru the winter with flying colors, and they had a good winter last year too, so that's a good thing. Elk? He said that this is the worst he's seen it in 40 years. They don't know why, predation has something to do with it he thinks, but not anything disease related. Possibly the increased human population is stressing them, or disrupting their migration routes. Oh yeah, double check zero because I know it will change. I have drops from the last time I was out there, but that was at 6,000 or 6,500 ft elevation and 39°F. I ended up shooting a cow at 5,000' elevation and -8°F, and that changed drop 2 moa. There are OTC Bull Elk tags for that area, and it takes a minimum of 6 points to draw a NR deer tag for 2nd season rifle. They said with me having 8 points, I'm pretty much at 100% for pulling a tag.

I think I'm applying for 3rd season deer in 3/301 this year. I hunted there back in 2012 and saw a bunch of deer, killed 2 hours into the season on a young 3 point. I plan on holding out a little longer this time and hopefully finding something a bit bigger.

I'll be back up at 26 in my usual stomping grounds and maybe sneak in a pronghorn hunt down south with Cush. We are strongly considering changing our usual 2nd season to 3rd next year depending on what we see this year. 3rd may "thin out the herd " a bit where we go and should be a better shot at deer as well.

Did you go to Cush's get-together last year? I know he mentioned maybe doing it 3rd season this year, but haven't heard anything about it lately.

Does anybody know when Co will be drawing the names from the hat for the licenses? I think the official posting date is 6/1, but they're often out a few days early.
