Attention IN hunters. The DNR will be releasing a NEW deer survey very soon. This will be done through email. They are doing this to collect more detailed data and learn more about local herds. We will be releasing more information in the future about what you can do to help the DNR collect even more detailed information to better help them decide the health of your local herd and bonus quotas for your area. In order to get this new survey you MUST have an account registered with the Indiana DNR. You can register for an account here secure.in.gov/apps/dnr/portal/#/register. If you do not check in on line and/or you don't receive email news from the DNR then you do not have an email address registered with the DNR. If they have an old email address or you aren't sure follow the link and try to setup an account. They will let you know if you have an account or not and they can help you figure out your password. It is important we get as many people to fill this survey out as possible. Talk to people and make sure they are registered with the DNR. If they are a landowner who isn't required to buy a license then they probably do not have an account. Therefor they need to register to get their voice heard. Please once you get the survey take the 10 minutes to fill it out and help our state deer biologist get the information he needs.

I sure hope I get one. I'd like to discuss the lack of deer in southern Indiana. Too soon?

WHAT??! There IS plenty of Whitetails in Good 'Ole Indiana, But they "ARE NOT FENCED IN"! "BOX HUNTING" I call it! Bowhunting Whitetail Deer IS an 'Art', that NOT just throws a Deer in your vision and plink or bang, Instant push button Deer Hunting! Look at The Tracks on the Earth, you'll Be Surprised at what IS there! I counted over 200+ Whitetail Deer just in (1) picked corn field one December, with Snow just a fly'in!

I like to know the total of deer that die each year. Predators, disease, traffic accidents, hunting and ones not found. It's hard to find even estimates outside of success hunting totals. How can they manage the herd without good data? How many died each year? Not even during hunting season do they know. A lot of missing pieces, so how can it be manage? Example: vehicle deer deaths are up by 2% means there more deer. Could be a false assumption. Maybe the number of drivers are up 4%. A little baby boom 16 years ago. Was that data calculated in? All they can do is look at trends over the years and the noise made each year.

You know of any other state that has the data you referenced? ..... please share info.

I think IDNR is average to better than average. They do get involved, which is good. I'm not slamming the process, just informing, that true deer management is very hard to achieve.

I was given a word of mouth figure by people that may know more! a few years back on road kills/ vehicle accidents etc, at about 450,000+ Deer yearly statewide, 3x+ times more than just legal Deer Harvest Summary gives us. Poachers and other factors Deer hit and run off to die a terrible death not counted into that number either, Waynes mentioned predation/predators above, That's Alot of Deer! Insurance lobbyists were wanting a Deer A Day into the regs and didn't get it at The State House.
Sooo ??, how many Deer are in Indiana?? I do not think that (1) Deer Hunters Survey is going to answer that ?? It may assist them a bit, they have done them in the past, the INDNR Deer Management Biologists has Deer collision/accidents figures, Sure! But they Do Not have poachers take figures that possibly outnumber the legal harvest of our Deer Herd.
It is like playing against 10 Checkerboards at the same time, Very Hard to do!

I was told a very long time ago that the accepted guess on illegal/lost kills is the same as checked kills.
Double the 2016 kill and add in the 14,000 deer/vehicle collisions and we are over 250,000 dead deer. Then there is the critters just trying to get a meal....

Not saying it’s wrong, but it’s hard for me to imagine the illegal harvest and lost kills being as much as the harvest numbers.

I was shocked at the numbers of the road kills then Deer hit and then Poachers take that are not figured in when I heard the above numbers of Deer lost. Amazing! There are thousands of Deer hit by big rigs that are just splattered out on the roads and interstates of the entire state that are never tallied as road kills either. Nobody calls them in! Amazing Numbers!
A lot of our wildlife is lost and not figured in. Just like the Canadian Geese that were being splattered on the road (blood) everywhere on fall creek across from The State Fair Grounds last fall, a federal bird, but it was rush hour and most everyone was NOT yielding to the right of way to those beautiful Canadian Geese. There were no Conservation Officers there stopping that devastation, a horrible loss of our wildlife. Amazing and Sad!

UPDATE... With some words from our Deer BiologistIndiana Hunters interested in being able to fill out the NEW hunter survey that will be coming out soon, below is the most up to date information we have about the survey. What it will cover and how to make sure you are registered for it, even if you are an exempt landowner or a lifetime license holder. Please take the time to make sure you are registered and complete this survey. We will follow this post up with another post letting you know the types of information you can track during your next hunting season to help the DNR collect more accurate data on our deer herd. In the mean time please read the following, make sure you are registered and please fill out the survey when you receive it. From Joe Caudell -

PLEASE go check this out... I went to see if I was registered with my email. I filled out all the information and it came back that my CID (Customer Identification) number did not match the name, SS#, etc. I've used the CID numerous times in the past to check in deer and turkeys but it says it "did not match". What the heck? I backed out and left the CID space blank and it gave me a different CID and registered me. What the heck again? I went and looked at CheckIn and put in my old CID and lo and behold it came up. ? I need to contact the IDNR and see what is what...

That’s what happened to me and I ended up having two different CID numbers. They merged them both together and I should now only have one.

Yep. Bet mine is now screwed up. No idea how to fix it. Not a smart idea to sign up for this if it messes up your accounts. Please let me know how this fix this.
