It was an exciting year of firsts for my little hunting buddy .....
I went this morning and sighted in my Encore MZ with a mild load of 80gr of Blackhorn 209 powder under a 250gr Hornady FTX bullet. Sighted dead on at 100 the load was accurate and the kick was very mild...good enough to put in his hands as we continued our quest after his first buck.
We headed out around 2:00 this afternoon and settled into the blind shortly before 3:00. An hour and a half goes by before we see our first deer and it isn't too much longer before before we have several different bucks and does feeding in front of us.
Unfortunately most every deer was much too far to even consider shooting...way outside his set yardage limit.
Time ticks on watching them feed and two bucks catch our attention and we hope and wait that one will feed close enough....
Finally the first buck starts walking our way but it never stops walking. Passing close enough to shoot but with a field full of deer I was hesitant to try and stop him and instead just hoped he would stop on his own. He had other ideas and continued at a steady walk till he was out of the plot. Gone.
The second buck followed the same script...walking and never stopping.
As we watch it walk out of the plot it's not long until nearly all the deer do the same thing...
With 3 does left in the plot I whisper to him "maybe tomorrow buddy"...
Still plenty of light left so we sit tight, waiting.
A few minutes later a doe appears from a blind spot 50 yards in front of our blind and walks broadside in front of us. I look behind her and tell E there's another one....a buck. He continues on the same way the doe did and stops at about 40 yards broadside. I'm watching through the binocs and telling E to hold on his shoulder and slowly squeeze...
The MZ barks and I very briefly lose sight of the deer through the smoke but a second later I have him again and know he's hit hard. I follow as he runs out of the plot and into the woods.
The deer made it about 80 yards from the shot. Hit through the near side shoulder with a back lung exit.
My taxi is loving me this year....and E gets a deer for his bedroom wall.
A special year with 3 generations of Wilkersons killing bucks.
