The extended weather forecast is looking pretty good through the end of the firearms season. Will that translate into higher numbers or will the buck harvest be down this season due to the late start and the lousy weather for the opener?
Time will tell....

Weather is a factor. Firearms opening weekend up here was a bust for many because of the poor conditions. Then throw in the fact that a lot of the corn up here is still standing because it has been way too wet to permit harvesting. Corn provides excellent cover for deer, and with it still standing, they aren't pressured to move out of it into areas where hunters typically set up shop.

Last Thanksgiving the kill was 2,187. I'll bet we blow that number away today...

I've figured it out. All those guys that swore to protest the DNR and their lack of listening to the experts on doe permits actually didn't but antlerless licenses and haven't shot any this year. :-)
Happy Thanksgiving, everybody.

Nice theory and all but I’m pretty sure it’s the high powered rifles have already decimated the herd.

If the DNR would break down the harvest info by counties we could pinpoint these protesters.... lol

It would be nice to see a 10 year control chart of the harvest data to see if there are any trends or significant changes. Without this we can only speculate, but I could see this year being a little lower than average, but significant???
The season seemed to start a little later to me. This combined with miserable first day weather, a dip wouldn't surprise me, but without the control chart, we just speculate.

I have no programs for it now, not even Word. However, I think arlowe is an Engineer or someone else could do it. I'd focus on the last 10 years. Obviously, there have been significant changes in the past, and we may actually be seeing a current declining trend.

Right now we are about 4,368 deer behind last season.
Time will tell....

This year is an excelent example of why we don't need a shortened gun season. If we only had 3 days of gun it would have been a record low harvest. 99% weather related, not deer population.

Not necessarily...can't assume outcome would have been the same if you drastically changed the rules.

How could we not with number of bonus antlerless available. It's by design as DNR has been in reduction mode for several years. Doubt we will ever see population numbers we had 10 yrs ago unless a group of landowners can manage their area to their liking

Personal management isn't an issue as long as those management methods are within the current written laws.
