Saturday was rough. I was nearly hit by a falling limb, my best friend was hit (just a scratch, but close to an eye) and I know a guy that had a tree fall directly in front of him. I got down from my ladder stand twice before I finally left for low, open ground. No way I would have went in the woods with a kid.
Saturday made 28 straight years of hunting on opening day for me. I guarantee that more shots during the first "questionable" minutes every year than I heard until 11:00 this year. I think I counted six besides my own two. I did not even go Sunday.

Thanks Woody I had no idea rifles would decimate the herd so rapidly.

If this year finishes within 20,000 of last year we can say the DNR has been very successful in their efforts in targeted deer reduction.

If we can keep harvesting about 1,000 more deer per day for the rest of the firearms season (that's what we've done the past 2 days) then things will shake out and even up with last year. Plus we will likely make some big gains over the next 4 days. However, we will likely lose ground over the last 4 days since that was Thanksgiving weekend last year (like most years). It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out compared to last year with the big differences between this years and last years opening weekends.

If this year finishes within 20,000 of last year we can say the DNR has been very successful in their efforts in targeted deer reduction. We can say it, but will it be accurate? Especially if harvest is up by 20k in 2018 vs. 2017?

My personal opinion is - If we had not had that horrendous opening day, and not such a good Sunday, we would be ahead of last year..
I’d bet half the deer hunters stayed home or quit real early..plus the archery kill was up do more had meat in the freezer and cues to wait for a better day.

A lot of people talking about deer numbers being down but with opening day being such a bust it really put us in ther hole. Looking at the daily harvests since then though think we will be ok. All the rain we've had a lot of corn fields still sstanding, at least around he re, which I think is hurting us too. If it can dry out and farmers can get these fields picked could be a super muzzleloader season if the weather cooperates. The deer are still there in most parts of the state

Another thought on the lower numbers is the Park hunts. I heard there was only 40 vehicles go into Versailles the first day and about a quarter of that on the second. I'm not thinking the "new" draw system for the parks worked very well at all.

My stand was near the road, and I got in stad with 2 min till light. I saw trucks flying by at 7:40est. Absolutely no excuse for this. We had a serious talk with the park naturalist about it and hoping the 2nd hunt starts better!

As I said in another thread, in my opinion the reduction hunts are a rodeo. I have been to two hunts in prior years and both were no fun. Too many hunters with questionable hunting etiquette. I did not apply this year and won't in the future

Went on a park hunt once in Versailles. I thought we were going to get shot. People were everywhere and it wasn’t safe to shoot. Put on every bit of orange we had and followed the quad guys dragging deer out. This was years ago maybe it has changed. Never felt so unsafe hunting ever.

Reposting this from the "Harvest" thread... Is the 2016 info coming from last years thread or the 2016 Harvest report?
