Question for anyone who owns one. What group size should I expect to shoot at 75-100 yds if using ammo that the gun likes, from a rest on a shooting bench. Not a windy day.
I want to get a rifle that will be used as a pest control gun that has a bit more reach than my .17 MachII, but not much more noise. (yeah, I know, get a can for it. That's in the near future, believe me.) 150 yds max. Something that I won't be upset if I get a ding in the stock. I want to put my wood stocked Kimber in semi-retirement before I booger it up somehow.

This is not the most technical information. However, the best I've shot was with a Savage 17hmr from Bass Pro. Twas a combo outfit with bull barrel and Bushnell 3-9x40 scope. Simply laid on a Caldwell pillow for rest we had it dialed in to pop limes at 100 yards. We were using the Hornady V-Max ammo.

I consider the 17 HMR to be one the best calibers produced in several years. It does what it does quite well. My experience is limited to 2 different guns 1) Marlin bolt action, low end cost wise 2) Contender. They both shoot groups at 100 that 99% would smack a golf ball and and quite often something 1/2 the size of a golf ball. They both seemed to do best with Horndady ammo V-max ammo. I've been thinking of selling the contender barrel if you might have an interest.

Should be able to hit a quarter off a rest also using same rounds as above it's a great gun with a low cost to go out and shoot

We;;, it looks like this one was made from lemons. I had a buddy shoot it from a rest and he couldn't do any better than I could. So, it's going to get unloaded and another one purchased.
Bolt gun, lightweight and going to reside either behind the front door or in the truck when doing property inspections for wayward varmints. Synthetic and not going to worry about scratches.
Thanks guys!

I shoot a Savage 93 combo and it is great. The only thing I have noticed is that our here in CO with the wind, that can be an issue. I also shoot the Hornady V Max rounds.

Thanks guys! I've noticed with the small diameter barrel it seems to foul up fast and my accuracy suffers after shooting it for a while. Try running a bore snake threw it every so often . Hope this helps

Hope this helps Thanks! It was the gun. Not 30 rounds went down the tube, of different brands and bullet weights. I picked up the replacement gun the other day, and even though it was blowing 10-15 mph, I set a target out at the same distance (70 yds) as the first one that was shot with the other gun. Huge difference. The worst group was about the size of the best group fired from the first gun, and the best 5 shot group was about 3/4" tall by 7/8" wide. I believe I can improve on that group size with some trigger adjustment and shooting in less wind. The new gun didn't come with a scope so I removed the scope and ringsfrom the old gun. It fit on the new gun without having to loosed up the rings from the scope. I picked up 3 different types of ammo but haven't shot those yet. Best group was shot using the CCI A-17 ammo, 20g bullet.

I have a Marlin and it will put them all in the same hole at 100 yards with the CCI TNT hollowpoints. I did make sure that the stock was well relieved to free float the entire barrel.
Never shot the VMax for groups, but sighted slightly above zero at 30 yards for squirrels puts it dead on at 100. Took a little gray last winter at 100 yards and the bullet hit exactly where the cross hairs were sitting.
I like it almost as much as the Mach 2 for squirrels. But headshots only with the HMR!

Well, something went south with the 17 HMR. Couldn't hit the side of a barn a few weeks ago. Ordered a target spring for the accutrigger, installed it and same result (thought it was me). Shot it at paper and at 100 yds 1 shot out of 5 completely missed the 8 1/2"x11" paper. Gun was working well before that, and had about 30-40 rounds down the tube.
So I thought it was dirty. I cleaned it and it shot a group about 3/4" high and 3" wide. Back to the drawing board.
I got out the torque wrench and torqued the action screws to 30 lb. in. (Black tupperware stock) Yanked off the cheap Weaver 3x9 and yanked the 5-25x50 Vortex Viper PST off of the 7mm Rem Mag for a test. The 30mm rings that were high enough for the 7mm were too low for the 17 HMR. I dug around in the scope ring/base stash and found a set of higher Vortex 30mm rings. So, the scope will go on and testing will resume, but first I have some stuff that has to get done at Mom's.
When I yanked the cheap Weaver scope off the 17 HMR the one cross bolt wasn't as tight as it should have been, so maybe that was the problem. Even though it doesn't have a lot of recoil, the vibration might have been enough to loosen it up a little. Time will tell.

Weatherby MKXXII 17HMR, Swarovski scope. This is is the most accurate scoped rifle I own and is tied for best looking with a Weatherby Mark V Deluxe, in .270 Weatherby magnum. Go here: www.chuckhawks.com/weatherby_markXXII.htm. Could easily end up as a safe queen due to its looks. I have owned this one for over ten years and it doesn't even stay in the safe. Will shoot any ammo except Hornady

Shoot the last 5 rounds out of the box and it is ready to put the next 45 right where you want them. I was able to pick up 2 bricks of Mach 2 ammo last year, so the HMR rode out the squirrel season in the safe. Probably will this year, too.
