I really thought we would harvest close to 20,000 today. Last yr day 2 firearms take was 12,500 ish. Doesn't look like we will get there. Be hard to make up opening day now.

I know the number of road kills are down this year in my county.

Low roadkill count in the NW also. That and lack of shots all weekend, has us thinking the herd is well under control up here. Two deer killed between about 15 of us that keep in contact. Slow year up to this point.

Very low shot count here as well. maybe 10 tonight which was most all weekend and none close. I have one area with a higher number of see than in past but most spots area horrible here in northern Brown county. That area has tremendous cover. The willingnest to hand out depredation permits like free candy for alfalfa fields around have definitely lowered numbers not hunting. Brown county has one of the highest depredation permit kills despite lower crop production and overall deer population.
It still amazes me we base numbers statewide vs areas. It is like comparing Lakes. Areas are totally different.

So, am I correct in seeing that opening day this year was approx 6,000 vs approx 25,000 opening day last year? Or is my math off base? I never really pay much attention to this data.

Yup without exact reported harvest data (48 hour thing and all) you are roughly correct. Weather the golden ticket for the reason why IMO.

Yup. If it'd been 50's and clear skies, I'd bet 20K easily drop.

We are already 6600 more harvested this year than last by Monday. I can't imagine how that is with the bad weather?

Yup without exact reported harvest data (48 hour thing and all) you are roughly correct. Weather the golden ticket for the reason why IMO. Weather always has been a major factor. Proof positive was this last Saturday.. Late start and real bad weather = lower kills. I too, expected the firearms season totals to be lower based on the late start, but it will interesting to see where the numbers end up after all is said and done. And...this season is a perfect example of why I like the length of the firearms season in Indiana. You get lousy weather (which it seems like we do @ some point in the firearms season every year) and you still have time to get out there and hunt. FWIW, I compared last year's season to date totals after the firearm opening weekend versus this year's season to date totals after opening weekend and they are roughly as such... 2016 61,800 deer. 2017 49,900 deer. Am I shocked? Nope...not with the late start and the lousy weather on Saturday....
