That's the first I've heard of Rattlesnakes in Switzerland county I've seen Copperheads but no rattlers I have a Massasagua on a walking stick a Pigeon river area road kill had two little rattles but was about 2 or 3 in Wide One was hit on Turtle Creek Road near Florence. It was smashed to bad to use when I saw it. I have heard about someone near East Enterprise finding one but I can't confirm that story.

I'm the same. Every snake except gardeners I bring home to help keep the small animals in check.

When I'm riding horse early fall and all spring with my daughter. I'm usually on a big gelding that absolutely hates snakes. He will do a Mexican hat dance on every one he can. Thats why he and I get along so well. I'm only worried about him getting struck with a rattler before he makes the killing stomp first.

Anybody ever try grabbing one by the tail and "cracking" it like a whip? Supposed to blow their guts out their mouth, I've heard.

I'd carry a black snake home but I don't know how the dog would handle it. My old dog figured out the water snakes and made a sport of killing them all.
Now if I came across a rattlesnake I'd kill it with out hesitation.

Limited numbers of timber Rattlers are many places that maps doesn't include. No doubt... Jefferson county is not on the map for Timber Rattlers but as hilly, rock-and crevice heavy and woody as a lot of the county is I can't believe there wouldn't be a few around. Ditto even more for Switzerland. The map, at least, shows where there is no doubt they have been confirmed.

I hope everybody saying they would instantly kill a timber rattler on site realize they are protected and could face a hefty fine.
I know they aren't deer, but a poacher is a poacher.

What would be the legal way to handle one that is near say, a dog kennel? Don't imagine I'll ever run into the situation but who knows. Will DNR come out or send someone out to remove it? How would they tend to tell you to handle such a situation. Wild, I'd let it go but dogs don't know well enough to stay away. I have buddies that get dogs copperhead bit every year and some rattlesnake bit. For the most part they just take the collar off the dogs so they don't suffocate since they tend to swell up in the neck area and pump them fill of anti biotics and Benadryl and let nature take its course. None that I know have ever lost a dog to it and I know guys that have at least one dog get bit each year. Regardless wouldn't want to take the chance and don't know how I would react to just let it be when it be by the kennel.

I've always heard if a person gets bit by a snake then kill it so you can show the doctor what bit you. Doubt that person would be charged for any crime by killing it. Sometimes common sense isn't so common. I'm not getting on anyone's prior comments but if I kill one you will never hear about it on a public forum.

Dnr will not come retrieve a snake. They may suggest an animal damage control company that you can pay.
Chances of any of us having a rattle snake near your house is slim...copperhead is likely in this area for sure. But still low probability. I would kill one if near my dogs or kids without hesitation.
I knew a guy who was bit on the fingertip by a copperhead. He said it was the worst pain he had ever experienced due to swelling and controlled splitting of his skin to prevent a rupture. He said he would have cut his arm off at the elbow if he would have known he could have prevented the experoence.

I'm sorry but poisonous snakes around any of my great grandkids or pets is going to die..
Protecting them is more important than protecting the snake.
Non-poisonous snakes get a pass and would be a learning experience for the kids.

I'll be honest I killed a rattle snake once. But it was me or the snake, Snake lost. But generally I would let anything go. I do however agree with firstwd

I know the price of a good barrel horse, and the price of even a good trail horse. There both worth a lot more that a rattlesnake. Around my family or my livestock. Well they will be taken good care of.

To all the snake lovers out there "you need your head examined". I've never liked them nor will I ever. My dad got bit one time by a snake not sure what kind it was but did not let go of him. Talk about searing that image into your head. Now if there is a snake in the house then I will do what I can to get it out of the house alive since I don't feel like replacing a wall or a kitchen cabinet. Now outside on the other hand if I don't have a gun with me the lawnmower does a real nice job of dispatching them.
No offense to you snake lovers, I just can't see what the benefit of having them around are; rats, mice etc. they make traps every day and sell them to me at Rural King.

I was at my property moving rocks by hand and found a ringneck snake. This thing was 4-5 inches long with a orange ring around the neck. If there's such a thing as a cute snake, this was it. My wife even held it.
