20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. When the disciples saw the Lord, they were filled with joy. 21 Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I am sending you."
-John 20:20-21
Over the past few weeks, we have covered a lot of information on who the Holy Spirit is and how He works. I think if we wanted to describe what the Holy Spirit does as a whole, we would say that the Holy Spirit points us to Jesus. The Spirit points us to Jesus by comforting, encouraging, empowering, and guiding us. But the question that comes next is this: If the Holy Spirit is pointing us to Jesus, what is Jesus pointing us to?
I think if we look at the four Gospels that accord for the life and ministry of Jesus, we can determine a pretty simple answer. Jesus is pointing us to other people. As the Holy Spirit points us to Jesus, Jesus send us out to other people.
As the disciples witness then risen Lord in John chapter 20, Jesus greets them and gives them a one-lined sermon, "As the Father sent me, so I am sending you."
One of the most magnificent parts about relying on the Holy Spirit is obeying Jesus's command for us to go out and reach out to other people. This is at the heart of what the gospel message calls us to do. Yes, the Holy Spirit does some amazing things in and through us in our lives, but I believe that one of the most powerful things the Holy Spirit points us to is being a "sent" people. We are people of Mathew 28:19, "Thererfore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit," We are sent out to be the hands and feet of Jesus for the world, ignited with the Holy Spirit that always points us to Jesus, a man who points us to others.
So here is my question for you as we finish up our thoughts and study on the Holy Spirit, where is Jesus sending you? How is Jesus pointing you to others? When is the last time you shared the good news of Jesus Christ with another person? How many people in the last year have you invited to join you in a dynamic relationship with Jesus? Who is Jesus calling you to go to next?
If you can't answer these questions with the answers you want, maybe it is time we can gather together to be a "sent" people. Because what we know about the Spirit is this: the Holy Spirit points us to Jesus who points and sends us to others. This could be your opportunity to be sent by Jesus with the flame of the Holy Spirit within your heart. Jesus is calling all who call Him "Lord" to go out and serve, love, and introduce others to the amazing grace of Jesus Christ.
We are a sent people. Where is Jesus sending you?
"And surely I am with you always, to the very end of this age." -Matthew 28:20
