A friend of mine is going to start a new job on Monday,At Amazon . He's going to work 40 hrs a week and weekend s off and all the overtime that he wants .He told me that they are still hiring. If I apply and they hire me I'll start off with making a nickel hire then what I make at the hospital. The only big draw back is the job is in Illinois. About an hours drive one way . But the good side is I'll only need to work one job , with all the overtime that Amazon has to offer. Any advice. Oh yea Friday , Saturday and Sundays off .

What about benefits. Vacation, health vision dental, matching 401k etc...
OT may be unlimited today but can go away tomorrow.
Amazon is a big company and only getting bigger in the near future. Could be a great opportunity.
Best of luck

Don't let the drive be a hurdle for you if you want the job. I've drove at least an hour each way to work for a long time and here in a week or so that's going to go up to 70 miles each way. Benefits and everything else Duff mentioned would be a big factor though.

5 day work week is 10 hours of driving that you are not getting paid for. 500 or so miles of wear and tear and depreciation on your vehicle each week that you are not getting paid for. $2000 per year in fuel costs.
Try and take everything into consideration ......

I agree with what duff said AND what swik said. The drive to and from work costs more than you think. That has to be taken into account. I figure it costs $0.65/mile to drive when you take into account the maintenance, tires, brakes, wear & tear and fuel costs, not to mention the 2 extra hours per day (in good weather) that you will be losing.
I drove 45 minutes each way to work for years and couldn't figure why a buddy that worked there had more time to do things around the house every day. Then it hit me - he only had a 15 minute drive, so he had an extra hour per day to do things.
A buddy was living large because of all the overtime he was getting for years. Then when the overtime went away he struggled to pay his bills. You are actually taking a pay cut because of the extra miles driven. Forget about depending on the overtime, put that away in a different bank account and don't touch it.

A lot of good advice. Glad you have options. Look for best option for advancement with better pay and their track record on raises. If you know someone at Amazon I would ask them or during your conversation (interview) ask those two questions. Maybe you can call pull to save you and your friend some transportation costs.

There is a lot to consider before making that decision. Everyone has given you some good suggestions already. How much are you driving to your second job? You might be better off driving farther to one job and working the overtime. I'm sure you would make more per hour with the overtime than working the second job. You might want to find out how often overtime is available. Is there a way you could talk to someone who has worked there for a while? Your friend has only heard the positives about the job. He hasn't even started working there yet. Employers like to entice new hires with all of the perks of the job. They don't tell you about the negatives. There is an amazon warehouse near my area. They are always hiring people. It could be because they are constantly growing or it could be because the workers don't stay there long. I don't know.
I drive 50 minutes to work one way. I don't mind it but I work 12 hour shifts so I only work 7 days out of 2 weeks. I listen to podcasts and music while driving. In the morning it gives me time wake up before starting my day and in the evening it gives me time to relax and unwind before I get home to my family. I have a small work car that gets 34 mpg. I use 2 gallons of gas a day.

There's benefits , vacation , health and I forget what else. All the responses so far are the reasons I haven't filled out the application yet . My part time job is going to mess with everyone's hours , I'll still work my 20 hours but I'll work 5 days a week 4 hours a day . Then after posting my original post I find out Aldi grocery store is hiring full and part time positions at $14.00 an hour as a stocker in the warehouse which is near me . And both jobs offer discounts on merchandise.

I used to let the drive keep me away from jobs but now that I have a longer drive I am ok with it it's an easy drive and time to wind up for work and wind down from work helps me keep my work and home life even further apart

Really PROBABLY about $25 a day all included, to get to work and back. How far are you driving NOW? You know your driving between two jobs is tax deductible. You driving to and from ONE job is NOT.

If you are happy where you are at think long and hard before making such a bold move. The grass isn't always greener on the other side .I speak from experience, been there and have done what your considering. Heck I had people trying to get me to leave my current job and I said no way. I make a decent wage and am now 3rd in charge, in line to become assistant plant manager and eventually plant manager.

With Amazon hiring so many folks because of it's anticipated growth I would think that U P S or maybe FedEx will also be hiring to meet the demands.

I work at a lamination factory that sells to amazon. I can believe they're growing, but I also know we have a high turn around on workers. Because nobody wants to work anymore and drug tests. The lady that does our random she goes out around the area and has a 60% fail rate. That could also be another reason amazon is hiring all the time.

I could work 2 hours a day for overtime that would equal ten hours per week at time and a half . Yesterday I filled out a job application at Aldi for the warehouse position , which pays $14.00 an hour and it's right down the street from me .

There is a lot of questionable practices these days by businesses and it completely depends on what you are willing to put up with. My job change was forced because I had a line of what I'd put up with. I don't work at the greatest place in the world, but I've worked at worse. The pay is decent, showing up is your job security, and it's just under 2 miles from the house. Driving less than 25 a week is so much better for me than 25 miles one way, I went from filling up twice a week to filling up once every two weeks. At $50 a tank, that's $300 a month savings.
