Hello. I'm looking to buy a 22 pistol and need some recommendations. What do you all use and like? My wife and my daughter are getting into shooting so this will be primarily a gun they can shoot at the range. I have already a couple 22 rifles and I have them zeroed with mini mags. Is this a round that usually functions well in a semi auto pistol? I'm also open to revolvers. Thanks for the time.

I bought a Ruger SR22 last summer and I really like it.

I do not suggest the heritage rough rider unless you just want to look cool

I use a S&W 18-4 but the older 17's & 18's (which are my preference) are getting pricey. If I was in the market for more of a value 22 I'd probably end up with a Buckmark.

I always liked the Ruger semi auto pistols. Don't know anything about them now, but they used to be great shooters and looked somewhat like a Luger.
I have a H&R Sportsman Model 999 revolver which I like a lot. A revolver may be easier to learn and operate for folks that won't spend much time shooting.

I've had a few that were all pretty good; my favorite was the Buckmark.

Thanks for the replies. Couple other questions that came to mind....Anyone of you hunt squirrels with a 22 pistol? Anyone use a reflex sight on a 22 pistol? Or would there be better options for optics if I wanted to shoot squirrels?

I've taken lots of squirrels over the years with a 22lr pistol, mainly a Ruger MKII with a 6" bull barrel but also with a scoped T/C G2 Contender, the Ruger was by far my favorite but sadly I had to sell it years ago to pay bills and haven't gotten another 1 yet. I've heard the newer MKIII and MKIV are just as good if not better and hopefully someday I will get 1.

I have taken a few with my 18; but mostly use a long gun. I have a 15" scoped 22lr Encore barrel and for some reason I have never used it on squirrels. I'll have to try it out.

For strictly shooting at the range I have a s & W victory that is a pretty nice handgun for the price. Easy to break down and clean. The new ruger m4 is also a strong contender. For hunting I have a ruger charger with a 2-7 x scope mounted on it

I picked up two High Standard target pistols earlier this year, date of Mfg. on both is 1968. One came with a Aimpoint red-dot made the same year, from a rest at 100 yds using CCI Blazer ammo it put 2 out of 3 in an 8" paper plate.

I've got a Ruger Mark II I really like and a couple Single Sixs.
But to be honest since I bought a GSG 1911 22lr, I've shot it almost exclusively as for 22 handguns. It's jut flat out a bunch of fun and you can lay down your 45 and slip this straight in the same holster. A couple extra clips and you are pretty much set for a lot of fun.

I have had a couple of Ruger MK2's and liked them, except for takedown. All gone away. Now zinging them with a low end Browning Buckmark camper special. A lot of gun for the money. I want a Ruger MK4, easy takedown, but the hunter model is hard to come by, and PRICEY!

I want a Ruger MK4, easy takedown, but the hunter model is hard to come by, and PRICEY! That's one of the things I like BEST about the Ruger Mark II. Mine is stainless and I NEVER have taken it down more than pulling the grips off it. Take it to the garage and plug in the air compressor. Get out three spray cans, ether first. Then the gun solvent and last the teflon remoil. Put on the rubber gloves and spray it with ether and operate it by hand a dozen time and blow all the dirt out with the air gun. May be do it again but then repeat with the fancy gun scrubber stuff a couple times and blow it all out. Then I'll spray it down with Remoil and operate it some and blow it out, normally that blows out clean. Then it's ready to go again for thousands of uncountable rounds more. I shoot it until it starts to malfunction before I clean it at all and this is all I do THEN. I'd never mess with any take down stuff even if it was a Mark 4. This is too easy, so long as ya got an air compressor.

Thanks to everyone for their input. This past weekend I went shooting with a friend and he brought along his Buckmark. Liked it so much I ordered one today.
