Depends on what you are wanting to do with it. 300yd deer gun I wouldn't do too much with it. Trigger if you aren't happy with it now perhaps. If you want to stretch it out then a stock upgrade wouldn't be a bad idea.

FWIW, I owned an Axis in .308 that was a consistent 1 1/2" shooter @ 100 yards. Sometimes (if I held my mouth just right) I could get it to shoot under an inch...lol. Point being, for the money it's an accurate rifle and will certainly do it's job if the shooter does theirs.
The worst two things about that rifle are the stock (it has a bit of flex in it around the wrist) and the trigger pull is heavy. BTW, if you do decide to upgrade the rifle, google "savage axis trigger job" and you will find a bunch of posts and videos about taking a coil off of the spring in the trigger assembly to lower the pull substantially. I never did it as I don't like to mess with things like that, but apparently it's been done successfully for years and if you do it yourself, it's free.
In the end, would I pour money into an Axis? Nope...It's a serviceable rifle as is, and if I wanted a "nicer" rifle, I'd sell the Axis and buy a nicer rifle.
