A few recent posts kind of brought this thought to mind. Seems like today's hunting and fishing publications are almost solid advertisements and the few articles are nothing but pictures and stats on the latest gear and gadgets, or state harvest data, etc. that anyone can obtain via some internet searches.
I miss the old magazines where the writers told colorful stories about the hunts and fishing trips they went on, described the country and the game, shared techniques and tips, etc. Seems like most of today's writers get their story material while sitting at their desk scanning the internet rather than actual in field experiences. Sure miss the articles from guys like Jack Oconner, Walt Prothero, Pat McManus, Gene Hill, Ed Zern, Ted Truebolld, etc.
What publications and authors were / are your favorites?

Deer & Deer was a good magazine, but it has succumb to few articles worth reading. I stopped this year all hunting magazines. I don't think there is a good magazine out there anymore.

It's been a long time since I've read any hunting magazine..
The "outdoor writers" in the local papers were poor at best.most just used their bully pulpit to badmouth the DNR..

The only magazines I get are American Hunter (NRA) and Bowhunting. I don't know why I get Bowhunting as I never subscribed to it, but I've been receiving it for over 5 years.
I go cover to cover in less than ten minutes on both magazines.

Same with me Woody, I get the NRA magazine and Bowhunting which I never ordered. That Bowhunting magazine might be the worst ever when comes to all adds and no stories. Just more stuff to go in the recycling with all of the NRA junk mail and weekly Cabelas and Bass Pro mailings.

I recently signed up for "Indiana Game&Fish" thinking after not receiving it for a few years it would have something new to offer. Seems like the same articles on the same lakes and public places to hunt as it was a few years ago. Along with more advertising.

Wasn't it 4 or 5 years ago they offered a free years subscription and a bunch of us jumped in it? I recall we posted it here.. They must really like us to keep sending it!

I don't know, figured the NRA, Cabelas or somebody like that sold mailing lists? I never signed up for it.
Advertisers probably foot the bill for the magazine so they send it to whoever they think might buy some of the advertised product. I'll bet Cabelas sends (25) magazine sized mailers plus another (30) smaller pieces per year minimum.
Outdoor retailers must know the math and have some kind of formula that proves sending XX amount of advertising = XXX sales.
My big days of buying hunting / fishing "stuff" are behind me. Now it's time to just use the stuff I already have.

I don't think the NRA wants anyone to get a hold of their mailing list. My Bowhunting comes to Woody Williams and not Clarence Williams which is what I'm registered at the NRA as..
A quick glance through it is about all I do...

Still get a newspaper with bargain cave adds and the promo cards from time to time but no more junk.

I've found the same thing to be true, too many adds, not enough meat to the stories. The best stories I read are on Bowsite.com, those guys write some amazing stories over there, true they mostly revolve around bow hunts but they all take so many pictures and tell about their hunts with so much detail. Outdoor Life and F&S can't hold a candle to them because these guys can expand on the story, give background, take a load of photos and never run out of room. the magazine guys only have a limited ammount of space for a full story and pics. Trust me on this, take the time to go over there after the big horn sheep, mountan goat, moose, bear, deer and even goose seasons. They have some grat write ups! Heck you can go over there now and read last year's stories you don't even have to wait for it to come in the mail. I compare the site to this one, a bunch of guys (and gals) talking about hunting, gear and other BS but it's a clean site, no off color jokes, no porn, family friendly and well managed.
