Does anyone use these? I am in need of some new arrows and although I do like the bloodsports, I am thinking of switching things up. I am looking for a hard hitting arrow. Speed is important, sure, but I am looking for something with a little forgiveness and deep penetrating power. The techs at Lancaster Archery recommend Carbon Express Maxima Red. Any thoughts or suggestions?
P.s. I'm not looking to start an argument, just looking for advice. Thanks!

If you want a lot of penetration a well tuned bow and an arrow with some weight is what you seek. I'm not all that convinced brand makes much difference at all. If you are shooting a compound and you aren't after anything bigger than deer any reasonable set up should give you a pass through with a good shot. Google Ed Ashby he did a huge study on arrow penetration on large African game. A heavy arrow, a stout 2 blade head, steel inserts, high FOC all were helpful.
As a traditional shooter that is only pulling 45# I set my hunting arrow up using some of his observations. 20% FOC 487gr 2 blade 190gr Steelforce heads. A woman I know shoots a 50# compound and she shot 325gr ish arrows that someone behind a counter told her would be good for her. After a couple of less than ideal performances she went to a heavier arrow (high 300's) she is getting much better results. I'd rather be a little heavy than light. Save the 5gr/lb arrows for the 3D course.

Thanks dbd870. That makes a lot of sense and that's exactly what I'm looking for. I only shoot 3D a couple times a year but I hunt much MUCH more than that.

Bought some today. Also got some new broad-heads to play with, still on the fence about them but I am too curious to pass them up, new nocks and filed points.

What kind of broadhead did you go with?

I bought some Muzzy Torcar HD. Not a mechanical fan really but, these peaked my interest. I have been shooting the Magnus Buzzcuts and haven't had a single issue yet. Just wanted to check these out.

Nice thing is that even with a failure you still have a decent cut. I had a major failure with a rage broadhead a couple years ago so I'll never shoot a totally mechanical broadhead again. They all have their disadvantages though. mine has been getting the fixed blades to fly true out of a high speed set up. Yes the bow needs to be tuned but it starts to get to a point where you have to be an aeronautical engineer to get it done and then your worried about a fly landing on the bow and screwing up the super tune you had to do.... lol

I know exactly what you're saying. I too had a failure with Rage a few years back. Made the switch to Magnus then and have been more than pleased. They shoot pretty true out of my bow but not my crossbow. I just like trying new stuff from time to time. And you're right, even if there is a failure, I still have a fixed blade cutting 1"

I got my Maxima Reds today. Topped them with the Muzzy Torcar HD and put in some green ignitor lighted nocks. They look great. Now if I can just shoot them great.

Thanks. The ignitor nocks are nice but, don't fit as securely in the arrows as I would like them to so I'm not going to use them.
