When I got married and moved south in 2003, I left 30 years of mushroom experience behind me. For some time I still had access to my old spots, but eventually they all went away and I was depressed as I hadn't yet found any spots down here in Jefferson county. About seven years ago I was doing something else on my hunting land when I spied a shriveled yellow sponge on the path. I looked around and didn't find anything, but I had the hope that I had found a clue that would lead me to a patch. A few years went by and I only found one more in the vicinity. Yesterday I walked over to the spot and found one pretty quick. I retrieved the kids from our nearby campsite, and long story short we found seven, and John found five of them! I'm so glad we went, and more glad John was able to find some all on his own. It was one of the best days of my life. I told my wife that I wished I could have magically included everyone I love in that moment. Memories for a lifetime. Someday, when the kids are thinking of their long dead father I hope that this day or one like it is what comes to mind. Brothers! A specimen of Fire Pink growing right out of a tree. John! Not the biggest mess, but not bad.
