LaPorte county ordinance proposal to ban discharging a firearm with 1000ft of a residential dwelling. Meeting Wednesday at 6pm CST at the county complex on State St in downtown LaPorte. A county commissioner is the sponsor, and the pro-gun president is on vacation. HELP!!!

1000 feet? That would pretty much eliminate shooting in the entire county, wouldn't it?

How does this work with the right to hunt law?
If hunting wouldn't that override the local ordinance?

Exactly the RTH does not over ride local ordinance or DNR season restrictions. Marion County has a ban on discharging fire arms essentially removing gun hunting. I think the rule is ridiculous but not a second ammendment issue either. But it sounds like this is a dead issue.

Well, Marion county is highly populated and urban! LaPorte county is about 98% rural farm country with only two populous cities, and they arent much. We dispatch nuisance animals, coyotes, and target shoot/hunt right outside our door. A lot of our neighbors do the same, yet we have never heard of any issues or complaints in 14+ years at our place. Just a ridiculous idea some moron dreamed up.

This just steams me to no evail. Some pencil pushing antigun idiot with a bright idea who has no clue what or who country folk are. Same with the city morons moving to the country in a subdivision thinking they are special now. They can all go back to town as far as I care.

Our neighbors have free range chickens and roosters crowing, cats, horses, cows mooing all the time. There are gunshots everyday from them dealing with raccoons and opposums, crows, etc. Thats everyday life for some of us.

1000 yards....there's 1760 yards in a mile.... You'd have to be over 1/2 mile from a dwelling.

Just a ridiculous idea some moron dreamed up. I am well aware. I was using Marion County as an example of a local rule that did not change when the state passed the right to hunt rule. My wife is from Hudson Lake and I hunt duck and geese in the back yard of her mom's home. We used to hunt next door of Oprah's farm. I have hunted in Mill Creek area a bunch too. Some massive fields down there. I think it is a bogus rule. Vote the idiot out who drafted it. I remember Geist Lake was taken away from us by Republicans who claimed duck hunting was a safety issue. But when facts were provided by I DNR to show 1 incident over a 5 year span vs too many to count of pleasure boaters in the same time frame were ignored. Brian Bosma endorsed it.

It reads 1k FEET. Not that it makes it any better. Yep, I read, "1,000 feet from a residential dwelling." A little less than 350 yards. Still doesn't make it any better because these crazies will go miles if given an inch!

Wonder if the 1000 feet includes your own property also .... 1000 feet from your own dwelling ?
