Left my Nikon at home so no pics today. Seen a Tom strutting a few hundred yards from where I was setting up my ground blind. Not a huge fan of ground blinds for regular turkey hunting because I like to run and gun. They are nice for rainy days though. Got all my memory cards out and will check them later today. Off to mow the lawn before work at 2.

I'll give ya'll a little tip I just thought up a few days ago.
I'm 62 and spent a career in a factory, shoot guns and ride motorcycles. NONE of that is good for your hearing and I'm pay'n a price for all that the last few years. I don't have the confidence in my own hearing I used to have.
I was sort of guiding for a guy and his dad the other day and I've just not been hearing a lot of gobbles. Yet this guy is suppose to be good on his own, a 13 year old boy as well should have good ears. Dang they kept saying they were hearing gobblers where I never heard a single thing like a gobble to me. That was really burning me down mentally.
CURED IT!
Not my hearing, I wish, but I did find a way to give myself a huge mental boost.
Got out my gobble call AND the range finder. I needed a way to tell could this kid really hear a gobble. Does he REALLY know what a gobble in the woods sounds like.
Sent him walking down the road away and when you hear this gobble call, turn around and look. I'll range you and it will tell us how far away "we" can really hear a gobble. Keep in mind the wind can change it and in the woods can change it. Here on the road is best case. I quit hitting him with the gobble call and waved him back at 200 yards.
Now, how far were those birds you were hearing in the woods when we were roosting them if that was 200 yards. "500 yards".
When I got home, I had my wife sit in the lawn chair at the house and hit the gobble as I walked around the yard and ranged back when I heard it. I could hear it pretty good my self from 200 yards even with the wind against me. That's better than I've thought I could hear 'em the last couple years.
Feel like I got my mojo back. I'm good to go.

I knew a guy once that killed turkeys repeatedly on public ground. I asked him his secret. He said to move in on a gobbling bird on the roost and then listen for calling. When you hear the hunter calling get 180 degrees opposite of him and just sit..no calling. He said 9 times out of 10 the bird would fly down away from he caller and right to him.

Jack,
Without hearing aids I am close to being deaf. For turkey hunting I use electronic muffs and they help a lot. My son with great hearing (takes after his momma )still hears birds better than I do even with the muffs on.

Can't wait for work to be over today. I have a vacation day for opening day tomorrow and I'm extremely excited. I'll get everything around after work and be in bed early for a 3 am wake up alarm and a 4:30 am arrival to the turkey woods!

IMHO All other things being equal, a blind man has a better chance of killing a deer or a turkey than a deaf one. It takes a life time of learning to over come it and be successful.
