One of the Engineers that works with my son has really peaked my interest in an AR build for deer season. He will be mentoring and assisting me as we go through the process. However, he is not a deer hunter. So, I am wide open for discussion here. AR 10 or AR 15? Caliber? Camo , black, stainless or other? I will keep this under $1,000. Our initial discussion has me looking at an AR 15 in 300 Blackout, Black with a SS barrel. I doubt I will look at subsonic but I'm open to that discussion. As I noted, this topic is wide open. I just thought it would be fun and informative for y'all to give me some input as I go through this build!

Last year was my first year hunting with an AR and I had a blast. With a lifetime license, I was able to take 6 doe (from 2 county's).I built a 300 blackout from a Spikes Tactical lower that I out together and a Radical Firearms upper. This gun is capable of shooting 1.5 moa. I uesd Barnes 110gr tac tx bullets that worked fantastic. This combo can be used to take deer out to 250 yards. The AR 10 in 308 is another excellent choice.if the new legislation goes through there will be other excellent choices.

Seems to me like the 300 or 308 would be my preferred choice with the 308 being top just for availability of ammo

I dont recommend building a 308 AR (i reserve the AR10 nomenclature for the Armalite 308 AR as it is the original AR10).
They are not mil spec and youll have a hard time matching parts.
I also do not recommend sub sonic 300 blackout. That said, i used a blackout pistol in 2013 with 110gr remington hog hammer and it was an excellent combination.

If you did go with the subsonics for blackout, I would buy the specialty hunting bullets that will expand at the low velocities needed. If your heart is not set on a build you can still buy a complete AR 10 for under your price.

I have a .300 Blackout and a .450 Bushmaster, and like both. I do prefer the .450 though, I've shot several critters with it and all have been DRT.

And I gotcha on complete AR's out there. I'm looking forward to the journey of building one myself (with help of course) so that is the route I will probably go!

My .450 is around 8 lbs. total weight, and the closest thing I have that I'd compare the recoil to is my Winchester 94 .30-30. Recoil isn't bad at all. I also have an 8 lb. .30/06, which generates significantly more felt recoil than my .450.

I'd probably wait and see if the rule change passes and get a 6.8 if it does.

I guess I should add, .450 Bushmaster is legal on public ground also if that's important.

I would like to have a .450 bushmaster just in case I have to hunt on public land.

One thing about an AR build, you are not limited to one caliber with the interchangeable uppers. Just cartridge length and diameter with determine an AR-15 or AR-10 platform. Now for something completely different, www.ruger.com/products/precisionRifle/models.htmlI shot one in 6.5 Creedmore and it was VERY accurate.

Daniel Defense makes an AR10 in 308. It's under their Ambush Firearms section. danieldefense.com/firearms/ambush-hunting-rifles.html?caliber=263 They use to offer an Ambush Firearms in Camo AR15 in 5.56, 6.8 and the 300 blackout when I got my AR15 5.56 a couple of years back. But I don't see them under the Ambush Firearms area anymore. Maybe they are under the regular Daniel Defense rifles. Only the 398 Ambush Firearms in Camo is shown under the Ambush Firearms part of their catalog these days. The 300 Blackout rifle is shown here: danieldefense.com/firearms/caliber/300-blackout/daniel-defense-v11tm-300-mil-spec-r.html But I like the camo rifles and won't buy a black rifle. I got mine in Real Tree Camo. They did a great job on the camo paint on my rifle. I don't deer hunt and have no place to shoot my AR15 other than the IDNR Shooting Ranges. So I won't be buying anymore high powered rifles. I'm extremely disappointed in the fact that they don't offer the Ambush Firearms AR15 5.56 in the current catalog anymore. I worry about their servicing my current rifle with parts. I wish I could get a different end stock that has the same Real Tree Camo paint job on it to replace my current stock. They charge a lot too. About three times what you are willing to pay if $1000.00 is your max limit on what you want to spend. They use Giselle Triggers and other quality components.

I'd probably wait and see if the rule change passes and get a 6.8 if it does. Well, it passed yesterday. Yeah, if I wanted to stay with the smaller AR-15 platform (as opposed to the AR-10), I'd choose the 6.8 SPC as well.
