Pulled into a customer parking lot and noticed steam coming from under the hood - OK guess I need a hose - open the hood - hmmm don't really see a hose where it leaking - man that's quite a bit of coolant - customer say hey you have a broken belt; sure is, it's a timing belt..........so timing belt broken and coolant leak not by a hose....what do think:

Hmm, my first thought was water pump! I've seen them babies seize (or on a rare occasion the tensioner sieze), which breaks a belt and yet pour out the coolant!

Is it actually the timing belt or the serpentine belt?

On some vehicles, when the timing belt breaks, it will ruin the engine. I think this is mostly on foreign cars. Even my wife's little cobalt has a timing chain.

Nope, serpentine belt and water pump are on the opposite end of the motor; belt is fine. I figured was a timing belt and the engine locked up when I turned it off but it seems the 3.0L Ford DOHC Duratec uses timing chains so I went back to it and it does turn over and actually caught before I got it turned off so not so bad as I thought. I do wonder what this other belt is for now! It is multiribbed but not as large as the main serpentine belt. Looking at the trail of antifreeze I may well have caught it before the engine got too hot. We shall see.

What make and model and year car is this on.....That motor should only have ONE belt I do believe. You sure of the motor size?

Is this a Taurus? In my '03 Bull, there is small water pump belt on the left side, and the serpentine belt is on the right side.
I had some cooling issues with item a few years ago and got it hot a couple of times before I got the problem solved. I talked to a mechanic and he told me they don't blow the head/head gaskets like they used to after getting hot, and I never have had any issues with the head/head gasket.
