I got tired of the plastic stock on my Howa .223. So I ordered this one from Boyd's. Unscrewed the old one. Screwed on the new one. I also adjusted the trigger weight down while I had the stock off. I like it quite a bit better this way.

Will you have to pillar bed it? How's it shoot now vs. the old stock? How much heavier is it now?

Will you have to pillar bed it? How's it shoot now vs. the old stock? How much heavier is it now? I didn't weigh it before/after, but it didn't make much difference in weight. It shot pretty well with the plastic stock, usually around 1" with the cheaper Federal stuff; I haven't had a chance to shoot it with the new stock yet. Do you think there would be much benefit to pillar and glass bedding a light recoiling rifle like a .223? I have a .30/06 I've been meaning to do, I may just buy enough supplies to do both.

It depends on your goals for accuracy. If you don't handload and are limited to factory ammo, you might not need to. But OTOH, pillar bedding it might increase accuracy for you. Wood changes dimensions with temp and possibly with humidity if it isn't sealed really well, laminate much less than non laminate. I'm trying to wring out every bit of accuracy I can out of my factory stock savage .223, which has a wood stock. It is not pillar bedded now, but if I see groups change in size or POI once I have it dialed in with handloads, I will pillar bed it.

Make sure the barrel is free floated , bed the action up to the back of whatever is the recoil lug, make sure your guard screws are torqued to the correct lbs/in and if hand loading determine how close to the lands and grooves the ogive on your bullet is. It's pain staking but in the long run, very rewarding.
