Opportunity for a real small lease between Crane and Bloomington. It's a mix of hardwood and CRP. How's the herd there? Turkeys? TIA! Backs up to a large tract of timber.

Localized herds can change from mile to mile...tough to say. I know the area and there are decent amount of deer as a whole, but can't speak specifically.

Yeah depends where at. I live and hunt SW of Bloomington, and the overall heard where I'm at is low, as well as the turkey numbers. However, you go 8 miles north, and there is several, so it depends. Tynimiller is correct, it changes a lot.

If you are thinking of leasing it, get out and walk it. Should be able to figure it out pretty quick.

I've hunted SW of bloomington the past 5 years and the deer numbers have always been strong. How big of a property are you looking at leasing? I would say pressure from the surrounding properties would of course make a difference as well. I've hunted a property a little over 10 miles south of my go to property, and the deer numbers have been horrible. It's probably because of a couple neighbors (and their families) shooting everything that walks by haha. It stinks, but it's their property.

I'm 20 minutes SW of Bloomington and am covered up in deer. I'm in NW Lawrence County. What county is the lease in?

It's about 50 acres. I walked it and jumped one deer, saw some sign not an abundance of sign though. Did find a ladder stand w a salt block probably 30 yards in front of it. That's always nice (sarcasm). Also found one tree stand on the fenceline where a neighbor is hunting it from 'his side' of the fence. Turkey sign everywhere. It's out off 45 about halfway to Crane. A buddy owns it and he doesn't hunt so lease is the right price hahaha. Thanks for the input guys!

While it may have been hunted poorly and could take a few years sounds like price is right and if you can do anything to it at all like plots or plantings or some hinging over time thing could be dynamite.

So it sounds like you would have a trespasser that baits to deal with?

I think everyone knows my thoughts on trespassers but I'd SUGGEST you discuss all this VERY THOROUGHLY with your buddy who owns the ground. There's more than a few ways to become unwelcome or suddenly find a "buddy" who's not letting any one hunt any more. Stirring up problems with his neighbors is one of the most common. Until he says other wise I'd just treat them like a new hunting buddy you never met and don't care to.

It's out off 45 about halfway to Crane. Greene County then. They have a bonus antlerless quota of 3, so the overall herd there is either stabilized or a little low. I hear of bruiser bucks taken there from time to time, so you ought to stand a decent chance. Good luck!
