On my way home from squirrel hunting today I saw someone with 2 deer silhouettes on their barn. It gave me the idea to make a buck and doe out of plywood and painted to look like deer and use a couple squirrel tails and some white cotton cloth to make realistic looking tails that could also hold scent on them. I think it's a great idea and would like to know what you guys think about it.

I've killed turkeys and geese with silhouette decoys. Montana Decoys make some food ones.

Decoying deer is a tough thing. I killed one buck with a doe decoy in several years of trying. All other deer were alert or spooked. They do not like a stranger in town. They know! Watching TV shows and seeing it work is not realistic in our hunting situations. IMO. Deer farms are a whole other story. Nothing wrong with trying tho, its fun.

I think it's a great idea and would like to know what you guys think about it. All you need is a few strips of white t-shirt or I've even used a tail. All that said, it's dangerous. Especially just walking around with a decoy as a general use tool. I've only ever used the little pieces of white when I've already SEEN deer and they just are not close enough or going the other way. If you can stop them with a grunt of blow and just flash them a little white like a doe moving or turning around back in the brush line or trees a lot of times it's enough to complete the ruse. Sometimes I'll tie the piece of shirt to my pull up line if I'm on the edge of a big wide field where you can see a long way, further than I want to shoot. You can pull it up and flash it around if they are walking the other tree line and leave it on the ground when there is no one you want to see it. It doesn't work at all unless you combine it with something else to make them WANT to see it.

I used my target doe in my foodplot only once this year on opening morning and killed a 10 point, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I like the idea of a rubbing post more than the decoy.

For a food plot or a field yes a rubbing post. However I'm hunting in the woods there are already a bunch of rubbing posts.

Possibly sometime over the weekend. I am taking my boy to one of two hotspots since it is supposed to be warm. Hopefully he can at least get a shot. Let's keep in touch during the week.

Right on will do. I was out at fishlake today but I'm up for wherever. There are a few at KOP. A bunch more at Winimac. Let's see what kind of time we have and how good the weather will be. Galena Wetlands is just down the road too.

I have used cardboard decoys before.Just the rough shape with a cotton ball and a piece of white garbage bag stapled it the tail position.Use the cotton ball to add scent.Put it where it can be seen as a security decoy and if they come in they spend time looking at it trying to figure it out but have never had a deer come close to it to check it out. You can get a Montana silhouette decoy quite cheap and they look very good. I've had a couple real neat experiences with mine (doe), and missed a bow shot at a nice buck that was working it.

I'd be interested in how the buck acted.I have the Montana Buck and found smaller bucks take a detour. They don't want to get too close. Wade

I've had my 3-D target knocked down and stomped so many times the horns won't stay on any more and the head is just barely hanging on.

What I have used that won't get you shot and is easy to carry in is...a white turkey tail or wing feather tied to a length of thread and suspended from a nearby branch. I suppose you could use a regular feather and spray it white if that's all you had. It's the flash of white that gets a deer's attention as the feather flutters in even a slight amount of wind. Placed in a thicket they see the white flashes of the moving feather, believing it's a tail and come closer to try to see the rest of the deer. It works and won't get you shot at. BOBinIN

BOBinIN And you can use the same feather as a coyote decoy. I always keep a few feathers off any turkey. tie a foot or two of string to them and sometimes use a fishing swivel to keep the line from twisting up. Mine kept getting bent or crushed and just general messed up so I got a foot of 1" pvc and couple caps to carry them in and painted it olive green. You can use that same pvc to dry a turkey beard after you kill one to protectt it and keep it straight while the borax dries it up.
