I'm beginning preparations for a 2017 archery elk hunt in Colorado. I've quickly realized there is much research to be completed prior to making the trip. I'm not looking for anyone's honey hole, but is there any experienced Colorado elk archery hunters willing to give me a few units they could recommend me researching further. I don't mind doing the research myself, but with all the units available, narrowing it down to even a dozen would be very helpful. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Colorado has a pretty good interactive Hunt-Planner on their website. I'd start there if you haven't already. You can look at all of the OTC units, compare harvest stats, etc.
Are you dead set on Colorado? I've hunted the Snowy Range in the Medicine Bow NF if you're open to Wyoming. You'll be paying a little more money for a Wyoming license though, unless you have a point or 2 already.

I'm not set on Colorado, but read that they have the largest elk herd in the country, so thought it would be a good starting point. I'll look into Wyoming as well.

Myself & a couple of friends had good luck hunting higher levels in Delta & Montrose Counties out there. I only went during their rifle season and that was years ago. But I would thing you'd need to hunt high during their Archery Season, due to warm weather, but depending on how high you are wanting to hunt. Heard their "High Country" season is good for Archery Hunters.

I archery hunted in the Montrose area several years ago. There were several elk in that area. Have been wanting to go back but haven't made it. I and Friends hunted on a private ranch out in Montrose County, Colorado. This Rancher's property was HUGE, and he and some of his family members help build the little town of Crawford, Co., where we stayed. He passed away several years ago and I believe his Nephew & also Cousin (Oscar) got his ranch. The Rancher's name was Stewart Collins, you might have heard his name from folks out there. SUPER NICE GUY! Saw lots of Elk out there and even had to pass on one 6 X 6 Bull once because he was in an area where it would be impossible to retrieve him. He was way deep in a ravine, so I guess the old boy new where to stay put during Elk season.

I hunted the Flowers Hot T way back when we all shot recurves... Compounds had not been invented yet. I climbed Horsefly Peak many times and hunted over on Sage Hen a lot. Price for the week then was $75 ...meals included. NR tags was $25 Next year it was $150...meals included.. NR tags still $25. That year the crew from Bowhunter Magazine hunted there, wrote an article for the magazine and then next year the price went to $300. I never went back after that.. $300 was three weeks wages for me then.. I started hunting up on the Umcompaghre Plateau after that.. Hank's Valley I mostly deer hunted and the the only elk I killed was by Haystack Mountain south of Glenwood Springs. If they would invent some flat land elk I'd hunt them again..

Wow, it is a small world. I think the last time we were out there the cost was 750 with meals. And I do mean meals. They sure did feed you.

I hunted Hot T as well in the early 90's! Wayne Flowers was an honest to goodness real cowboy! I enjoyed hunting there very much. I just wonder if one of his sons has continued the operation.

Woody, I just checked, and Hot T Camp still has a website, but our names are not listed next to Pete Shipley's! 😂

My Niece "Helen" lives in Glenwood Springs, Co. Yes it is a small world and I've heard of that Hot Tea Camp.

I've hunted the Grand Mesa near Collibran, CO and the Uncompahgre near Norwood, CO. Killed a bull at each place.
