All part of the process. The good, the bad, and the ugly. I would do the same when my boy gets to this point. They need to see and respect the entire situation. He wont forget it.

I would have followed 30 min later with the way she stumbled around. But every person see's things differently. You very well could have walked around her for hours,been there done that, and never stumbled across her. especially when they back track towards where they came from. Live and learn. I have tracked deer for my boy that he thought was a good shot and then the blood trail just gives up.
Tell him congratulations and get another one.

I would add an agreement with what some others have already pointed out: When ever I have seen deer stumble like that, with their back end seemingly going a different direction than the front---they have invariably ended up dead close by. Just an observation---and one that is easy to miss in real time.
