I love and miss Ely MN! Used to go up there every year fishing. Lots of bear, moose and awesome small mouth, walleye and pike fishing. Friend of the family, Colonel Rusk, owned Northern Lights Lodge on Bear Island lake for many years. Last I heard the area had developed quite a bit. Ruined the wilderness atmosphere it used to have. Yeah he though treks across a large river or lake to his hunting spot, not sure if still technically Ely. He loves it up there and I believe he and his wife run a lodge even.

I'm starting to think food plots relocate a lot of deer. I don't have any static's, but it seems that way. There seems to less and less deer in big woods and a lot more around the food plot areas. A neighbor from my brother's place put in a food plot three years ago and I've seen their pattern change. The side area near the food plot did not hold many deer. Not much food in the area and now it is loaded with deer. I consider the popularity of food plots today to be a big factor in reduced deer sightings people are complaining about. The deer are still there, they've just moved on to greener pastures. If Indiana goes to baiting, it'll be even worse.

You allow baiting and as far as seeing yearlings and even up to about 3.5 year old bucks it will simply be who has the biggest bait pile and can keep it going.

That's probably the biggest concern I have with baiting. It's a scheme to sell more product.

What I would give to see a study of all the "bait" on the shelves of Walmart/Big R/Meijer and such during hunting season only here in Indiana....sad fact is baiting is already occurring it just isn't abused like it would be if legal.
I agree, Muzzleloader, it won't happen so long as TB is in the decision making folks.

Big bucks for big buck$

I'm not for baiting at this point. Simply because the numbers aren't there to support such "easy" hunting. I'm facing two big issues right now. (1) There are 12 people that hunt the square mile block that I hunt on. And yes, they have every right to be there just as I do. (2) The doe harvest allowance is 8 in my county. Some of the 12 hunters try to shoot that number each year. To be honest, if we all only shot 1 doe a year that's still too many. Too many hunters on the block with too many different ideas of deer management. We can't all get on the same page. Some guys are open to conversations about deer management but others get offended. I will keep on doing my part of not shooting does on this farm, especially once breeding is over. I know the mile block has great potential. It has nice ridges, water sources, CRP and a sanctuary (on my farm), woods and plenty of crops. But with kind of pressure, it'll never reach it's full potential. I'll continue to hunt the land and thank the Good Lord I have a place to hunt. I know this post makes me seem ungrateful but, that's not my point. I apologize if I came off that way.

6413 so far and will this season total be over and under last year of 123,644. I think the numbers will be lower for three reasons as follows:
More Predators Woods/field are thicker (rainy warm summer) Early warm weather so far

If I were to predict...numbers will be within 1% either way but probably lower...Since late 80s we've consistently went up and down swings.

Some guy I know says the entire heard will be wiped out for 3 states in every direction!!! He's been hunting since I was in diapers so it must be true!! /sarcasm Numbers will probably be in line with every year. Increase or decrease will be negligible.

Agree, you wont see an increase because of HPR, you might see a increase in wounded animals. Guys shooting long distance and winging a deer.
