Very sobering, if you dont have a vest or harness, get one before climbing.

I fell 18 feet while in process of hanging a stand 10 year's ago. Broke 4 ribs and cracked my hip. Very lucky that I was able to grab a large tree limb on way down that slowed down my momentum or could have been much worse. I was by myself and no one knew I was out hanging the stand. ( A no, no. ) I crawled 50 yards to my 4 wheeler and drove to neighbor for help. Prolly in shock right after the fall as I had the wind knocked out of me and was in a lot of pain from the broken ribs. Was really hard to breath for quite some time and all I can remember thinking was to get to 4 wheeler and get help in case I passed out. You think it will never happen to you. It can. Be safe out there.

ALWAYS WEAR A SAFETY HARNESS HUNTING OFF OF THE GROUND! people say vests or harnesses are uncomfortable or reduce mobility. however, you want have much mobility or be comfortable after falling from a tree. SAFETY FIRST!

Ive fallen .... not fun. But even that fall didnt convince me to wear a harness for many, many years. It wasnt until kids that I realized there was more than just me in the world. Now Ive become so used to wearing a harness than in the rare times I have to leave the ground without wearing one it is just weird feeling.

We all have been guilty of not so safe climbing techniques, I fell out of a baker stand when I was about 15, around 73-74. Won't bounce back so fast now being 57. Fell about 15 feet and landed on my feet and rolled so I was not hurt.

I've had to "drop" when I lost the foot platform to my climber. Luckily, I was only about 12' up, so hanging from the rail my feet were just about 4' from the ground. Both platforms are now securely tied together.
Otherwise, I tend to be very careful while climbing. A healthy fear of heights keeps me in-check.

This reminds me, ive been meaning to do training at my work and the fire department I volunteer at, as well as the other FD in the county on treatment of not necessarily falls, but long term suspensions from safety lines and harnesses.
If anyone is interested, ill share some literature on suspension trauma. *
*this is not medical advice blah blah blah
