Someone is claiming less than 5% of hunters harvest over 36,000 deer.......LOVE to see proof of this.

The only data point we have for the number of hunters that take more than 2 deer is from the 2010 survey. www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/files/fw-MR_1034_2010_Deer_Hunter_Survey.pdfPage 28 shows a table with the percentage of hunters that took 0-8+ deer. Doing some math with the numbers, you'll see that 4.6% of hunters surveyed took 4+ deer, totaling 31,223 deer. There is a bit of a mis-match of the total deer taken versus the calculated taken because of the 4.1% of respondents saying they "didn't know" how many deer they took.

What would the number of hunters be that represent that 4.6%? I've seen this study, would love to see a new one done too!

So 4.6% would be 7098 hunters. I agree this should be done more often. I think a survey should be required to be completed each time a deer is checked in. Since it is already online and the webpage built, just add more questions.

Your question of how many hunters led me figuring out how they got the 36000 number. So depending on the unknowns, the number is somewhere between 31k and 36k.

4.10% don't know how many deer they took, that's interesting. 6326 hunters had no idea what they shot that year?

That is still roughly just 4.5 deer a hunter average...granted much higher than I've ever done in a season personally but a far cry from what some claim fellas grabbing 8+ or even a dozen or more a year. I do think it is a small number.
Now the crazy thing is I'm currently hunting multiple properties but they are in what I'd consider 3 very different localized herd settings amongst them, despite in same county.
I could this year easily justify a doe an area...and tag a buck...but doubt I do that unless come late season it seems very few does were taken out. I'm a big fan of waiting to harvest a 2nd doe off any area until I can somewhat gauge the hunting impact for the year and maybe do a late season hunt.

I would say, more than likely, they didn't read the survey correctly or misunderstood. I can't imagine the 300 or so people (about 8000 surveyed) didn't know how many deer they killed.

With the current system, no need for survey questions to answer the question. Should be a simple answer to find out how many deer killed by each hunter. Its all in the data base

I hope the new person at the DNR, accomplishes this. However, who knows if they have a contract with a company that collects all the harvest data for them and what that all entails/allows without additional money. Sounds corrupt but they could be tied to a contract until they get out...hope that isn't the case though.

I agree, it would be nice for a new study. For about 8-10 years I took either 3 or 4 to feed my family. Since 2012 EHD, one or two. This year two is planned. One early doe (October) and then hold off for a large buck (160+). If no buck, then a 2nd doe late season either in Indiana or Ohio.

So less then 15% of Hunter kill more then 2 Deer.... The better question is how many deer are killed with a regular lic vs antlerless permit ?

But, those 10.2% accounted for around 40% of the total deer killed.

How many of the 40% could have or was killed with a regular lic?

How many of the 40% could have or was killed with a regular lic? An estimated 28,231 deer were killed with "bonus antlerless" license. That's the only data they give, about 19% of the total kill.
