"I had a nice phone conversation with our very own Deer, Elk and Moose Management Specialist, Chad Stewart. He has had the benefit of working both in Michigan as well as Indiana, where they have mandatory check, and no survey system. He was kind enough to help me break down the benefits and challenges of the different ways of making harvest estimates - yes they both estimates either way. Neither state has a concrete, definitive number of how many deer were harvested in a given year." www.mucc.org/why_plus_minus_is_good_enough_for_deer_management Good Read....

I have often wondered how many deer do not get checked in?

It takes a very naive person to believe that a reported harvest total is 100% concrete, due to poaching/injured that die animals and unfound animals. However I've also felt it takes just as equal a person in the naive category to believe the harvest totals are completely out of left field and not "close" to the actual.
Enjoy the write up and thanks for the share greg!

Really wish this article would get before the eyes and minds of all Hoosier hunters....sadly doesn't seem to be catching fire though this off season. It's not catching on because there are people, with little to no education, that think they know more than anyone at the DNR because they have "hunted for thirty years". I have worked with some of these same type of people and most of them are not smart enough to pour pee out of a boot with the instructions written on the bottom. Sometimes I think they lay a string to work so that they can find their way home. How these people figured out how to use the Internet is beyond me. Much less start a page, form a group and maintain it. Getting followers is the easy part though. There's plenty of these people around that will believe Billy Bob, because he's hunted for thirty years and must know something. That and it's the off season.
