For what it's worth, my sporter rifles will probably shoot every bit as good as those big tanks, and certainly will shoot a lot better than myself and most shooters I'd greedily take that bet... Can I get in on that bet too? siprecision your not giving up on my 358 GRANT 1.8" are you? Are you T.S. or one of his friends?

A 15lb rifle on a hunt out west, where you may hike 10-15 miles per day for a week? No thanks. But a box blind on uncle Ed's back forty is how most Hoosier hunters use their rifles.

Tell T that I said hi. It looks like I'm SOL on my 6.5X47 and 280 AI. But on the other hand there is nothing wrong with my cartridge. 200 gr. bullet @ 2950 we were way ahead of them anyway. Are you all still using the brass that my brother made you or did you get lined out on making your own?

Will do. Yep still using it. Although I did get the form dies and whatnot.
We're shooting 225s at 2850ish. It's a monster!

This will probably ruffle some feathers, but the current trend to hit the woods and hunt with an AR or AK type "battle rifle" or 20 pound sniper rifle gives me the creeps. I don't want to be around anyone hunting with one of those, and you're not coming on my place or hunting with me if you are carrying one. That's not a hunting rifle in my view, it's a killing rifle made for fighting humans. I'm in no way anti gun, own several myself, but they will never go deer hunting with me. I'm guessing many farmers would be pretty turned off when you jumped out of the truck carrying one too. Bad for the hunter image in my view. Doesn't bother me but If you look up first gun, it was designed for WAR in the first place not hunting.

Told you it would ruffle some feathers. That's just my opinion. What defines a "sniper rifle" from my viewpoint? There have been photos of a few in this thread; weight about double or triple that of a standard rifle, scope as big around as an oil can with compensation mil dots and adjustable turrets, heavy bull barrel that you could use as a jack handle, plastic adjustable giant fat stock painted the latest urban camo with a five pound bipod and 12" long suppressor on the front, etc. And don't forget it is best in some weird wildcat round that you can't readily buy anywhere. You get the idea. If you ever went elk or sheep hunting in the mountains, you'd throw that big thing in the trash before the weight killed you and pick up your old dads 7# model 70, 30-06 with a 2x7 scope.
Ya mean one like this?
Here's another picture of it:
But, it doesn't meet all your criteria. It's 12 pounds as you see it. Scope has a 50mm objective. Heavy bull barrel? Not really. Plastic stock? Yes, Adjustable? Yes to get a good cheek weld. Painted? Nope. 5 pound bipod? Nope. No suppressor because the muzzle brake works wonders. Besides, the bullet gets there before the sound anyways!
Weird wildcat round that you can't buy anywhere? Yup! But, lets see you walk into Wal-Mart and buy a box of .358 Hoosiers......
I have humped it in the mountains of Colorado for Elk. Eberlestock J1 Backpack makes carrying it a breeze. Besides, when you can shoot a distance, you don't have to worry about "I walked all the way over here and it took a couple of hours. I sure hope the elk is still here!" Find a good vantage point. Break out the spotting scope/binoculars. Sit and glass. See one? If it's the one that you want and the conditions allow, drag the rifle out, lay down, read the wind, figure out the dope and send it. Pack the rifle away, get out the knife and walk up to the elk, no sneaking around required.
FWIW, that 'yote was just shy of 1/2 mile away, and it's mate never knew where the bullet came from. It came back to check on her not 10 seconds later. I forgot the adjust the scope 1.5 moa and missed, or there would be two laying there. My buddy got it not 300 yds away from where I shot her when it ran past him.
Show me a Model 70 that weighs 7 pounds with ammo and a scope and rings and bases and a sling. Is that a 2-7x30 scope?
BUT, since 7mm isn't legal (yet) I still can't use it during firearms season for deer in Indiana. It IS legal to use during a depredation hunt tho.............

Since several members are showing photos of their sport converted military rifles; though I would post mine. Bought an SKS rifle years ago which is a NORINCO brand (made in China) rifle which I converted to a more sporting type rifle, by removing the: bayonet, cleaning rod and the lugs that held them on the rifle barrel. Replaced the 10-shot magazine with a 5-shot one, and replaced the military stock with a sportier type stock (laminated) made by Reinhart Fajen of Warsaw, Mo. Also replaced the rear sight with a Williams Peep Sight. Result was the rifle shot more accurately, but I never used it for hunting.

Great article and spot on really. Those familiar with firearms and especially the AR-15 or AR-10 platforms can quickly notice if a build is about precision hunting or tactical training. I think the biggest "fear" of this style is that rarely are many around or see images of folks with this platform anywhere except at the range/at war or in law enforcement. Perception is powerful.

I was curious what my SR762 weighed... 12.2lb. 16" barrel with 8" suppressor, so not really any different than standard bolt actions lengths. Maybe a couple pounds heavier, but I don't notice when I carry it on my pack or the quad.

greetings the truth is woody over here that is the perception of not just military guns but all guns. true story. My friend took out his daughter and her boyfriend foxing down in the midlands. fox came in john shot, the boyfriend said(and this is as true as as i am sitting here) but, but, there was no sparks when it hit it. John says what do you mean there were no sparks, boyfriend says on the telly there is always spark when the bullet hits. Now folks that is the mentality of the british city dweller and television has done more harm to hunting, gun ownership and your military type guns than any politician ever has, and that is a fact. tv is very dangerous at times regards Billy
