The reason that they couldn't allow anything in between .243" and .308" is that the law wasn't written in a manner to allow them. The legislature only intended to allow five cartridges, but due to screwing up the language, ALL .243 and .308 cartridges are allowed -- even wildcats.

I'm surprised they didn't include cartridges in-between .243 (6mm) and .308 (7.62mm). Now the delhema - I was planning on building an AR Hog gun. Earlier this year (before HB1231 came up) I was thinking of building it chambered in .450 Bushmaster, which would also be legal to hunt deer with under the old regs. But now that .300 AAC Blackout is deer legal, I could build it chambered in the Blackout which opens up the possibility of getting a suppressor in the future (after I buy the Federal Tax Stamp) and going silent mode... Decisions, Decisions... I vote .450 Bushmaster, it's a hammer. I'm thinking of building a .300 Blackout too though, since I picked up another stripped lower a few weeks ago from Rural King.

Teehee. The floodgates have opened.
Well, I was planning on buying a lightweight .30 WSM but put it off because I didn't have any out of state hunts planned this year. Now if it becomes legal, (still going to wait until the can't reverse anything) I just might get it this year.

The bill started out as .243" and up, but ran into opposition in the Senate. The only way to get it to pass was to limit it to 5 cartridges.

I don't foresee to many hunters running out to replace their 7mm or .270 with a .243 or .308 just a guess

Not to rub salt in anyones wounds but I for one am celebrating. I have a 300 blackout upper on order from Radical Firearms to go along with my new lower build. I have been working up load info and counting down the days until the season. I still think it's just a short time until other calibers will be included. My hope is that the DNR will work on limiting the doe quotas and remove the late doe season as I see this as the main problem with the deer numbers.

Not to dredge up an old topic, but i shot my SBR lower with my 8" 300 blackout upper for the first time today(its been on my pistol lower since i got my stamp back).
That sure would make a nice deer gun. Oh well, whats done is done

IIRC the 300 Blackout is good to use.

Yeah, it was stupid for them to include the 16" line in the bill. They thought that they were simply defining a rifle, when there was really no need to in the bill. I'm sure that they had no intention of excluding SBR's (since they were already legal in deer calibers, but like the whole five cartridges turning into dozens fiasco, it happened nonetheless.
