10 acres is most likely what is in my price range and if it's in the right area would be more than sufficient. although I would like to go much larger.

Just as a counter to the theft/vandalism comments; I've owned remote property in SE IN for about 5 yrs now and (knock-on wood), never had a problem. Granted, the two structures are far off the main roads, and behind locked cables; so the casual trespasser isn't going to run across my structures. I try not leave anything out there really worth stealing; but so far so good. I think placement of your structure has a lot to do with things. If people can see it from the road, and notice you're not there, it will become a target. Most thieves are lazy, so make it a bit difficult (walking too far, chains to cut, deadbolts, .....), and they won't bother; unless you give them a big enough target to make it worth their while and people know it's there.

I usually try to work a deal with a neighbor to keep an eye on things. Pay them or their kid a few bucks check the place routinely and make sure we have no problems.

This turkey hunt for veterans was like a hunting camp. We all stayed in two big cabins. There were 16 vets and one old fat handicap guy plus some of the guides stayed there too.
It was so much fun talking with the vets. Some told great stories that kept me hanging on each word. I loved it!
Rodney Bruce hosts the hunt and provides everything for the weekend, but no one hunted his property. He gets permission from local land owners. He asked me what you guys thought about my first turkey being a canned one. LOL It was free-range though, but I needed a guide to get it done.
I learned a lot!
My Marine friend lost his job about a month ago, and commented on all the food at the camp. He said he eats only one meal a day and can't eat all he wants so his family will have something to eat. At the camp, he ate a lot and all he wanted. It was wonderful to see.
There are a lot of hungry people out there.

Post some pictures as you make progress on it. I'd be curious to see it. I'm just starting to get the roof on but it's beginning to look like something. Wish the weather would dry up for a while!

You don't want to own a permanent piece of ground that you can't watch over every day of the year. In your absence thieves will break into your buildings and steal everything whether it's nailed down or not. Critters will do damage to your things, trespassers will take advantage of your absence. Taxes, utilities, insurance, maintenance ect. Then the discussions who will do what and why wasn't this done. The area suddenly becomes void of game, partners loose interest, divorce, kids, guests. Rent it,use it then go home. I love to fish Lake Erie but I don't have a boat big enough or equipped well enough to do it safely so I charter. The Boat I fish on and the captain are well seasoned and we always have excellent success and when I get home the only thing I have to do is wash my laundry and freeze my fish. I enjoy hunting and fishing as much as the next guy and that is why I bought my own place here in Indiana where I have a lifetime hunting/fishing license and where I can control my environment because I live on the property and NO you don't need to be rich to do so you just need to do your homework. I still travel to other places to hunt and fish but I enjoy being a guest and not having to deal with all the hassle. Agree 100% All that is true. BTDT all the above. That said, the times I remember best and miss most are the times we hunted together on weekends. I was always the semi invited outsider friend of a family member. Bottom rung at the camper. Bottom rung barely hanging on at "the old home place". Both with the same crew. Then my "in" in that bunch got divorced and we started over. Eventually he bought a place in HNF and we started to build up a tradition there but there was still "all his family" I felt had dibs before me. The owner swore they didn't and repeatedly told me to do what I want. I just wouldn't. In a few years I had a few places I scrounged up and shared w/ my brother, my buddy and ONE friend and we all together started getting some tradition going. We ALL hunted together in and out of every where in each other's stands and blinds and spot. I lived in HNF myself by then, not far from my buddy who got here first. My friends and my brother always stayed at my house for the week or week end. Never realized how good it was until it was gone. They are all gone now, divorced, got a girlfriend, died or just moved away. I never changed, they all changed or left or died. This year, "hunting is MY LIFE!". Next year, "well my wife, girlfriend, boss says... it's too cold, windy, hot, raining any way."
