well i made it back to indiana with no wolf. wasnt from lack of trying hunted 8 strait days from daylight to dark sometimes driving one and half hours in the morning trying to get there before daylight my nephew lives in stevensville about an hr. south of missoula. we hunted bitterroot nat, forest and up around lola nat. forest and a few other places. basicly our plan was to drive forest service rds. looking for tracks and try and figure where or which way to go, man was it rough snow was alittle to deep to get around very good with chains on all four it was pretty slow, first thing anyone serious about hunting wolfs a snowmobile is a must. we rented one saterday boy was it alot faster covered 55 mi. in one day, and probly had our best chance to get on some we come on a fresh deer kill, that had about 5 wolfs on it,we started following them up a forest service rd, where we found fresh beds and crap everywhere. this is the tricky part it was 11 am when we came across these tracks you just don, t know how far to go on snowmobile. they might be a 1/4 mi or 3mi or more. walking in 1 to2 ft of snow is no fun especily for a old man like me. we decided to go as far as possible with the sled. hopeing to catch them on the rd yet.we were probly going 40 or50 mph up that rd. well we got to a spot where they cut off of the rd. and went strait up.probly 500 to800 vertical ft ,i elected to pass on that climb not knowing what was on top, more of a climb or what. my nephew took off without much of a hestation i said i,d be waiting by the sled well about 2 hrs later he come bounding back down that hill. first thing he said you ought to be glad i did.nt go the snow was up to his sack on top they went up another ridge and across another canyon.we tried to go around on the sled to cut them off but with no luck sitting on 2 different ridges until dark he thought they might come down.found a couger kill one day that had 1 wolf track close to it,sat on that till dark with no luck.followed a few other tracks on different days but could not get them any fresher. tried howling with foxpro caller with no luck.tried elk calls deer calls yote calls all nothing,my nephew could,nt find his cord to download some dogs barking the cat hunters say they won,t put up with dogs in there territory,s they have trouble with wolfs killing there dogs when they are treeing a cat. if anybody want to know anything else ill see if i can answer , they are probly the hardest animal to kill, just because of the terain and the territory they cover, they might be in a area one day and not be trough for a week or more im not any good at posting pictures but ill try nothing but senic snow coverd hills and wolf tracks, plus the couger kill,

Thanks for the update! I was starting to worry a bit.
Will you do it again?
What would you do differently?
I figured you were a young fella just to attempt the trip.

yes i,d probly go again i would say what i would different is make sure we had a snowmobile from the get go you can just cover so much more ground looking for tracks. im retired so i can go on the spur of the moment id make sure there was,nt so much snow . the snow we had was tough to walk trough no matter how good of shape your in considering the vertical terrain. call the wolf bioligest the first day he was extremly helpfull telling where all the wolf packs were last seen we didnt talk to him until about day 5 talk to as many local hunters as possible especialy the cat hunters they hate wolfs you will run into them while you are looking for tracks

Sounds like a good time. I think most wolf kills are incidental, shot while elk hunting/etc. I'm sure it would be fun trying for one though.

I shot a nice wolf in Alaska caribou hunting several years ago. It was just a lucky deal, he just happened to pass through an area while we were sitting and glassing.
