Dad and I send in religiously every year for the draw hunts. Its one of the few times a year we can do stuff together with out any worries. We had a friend from work who started hunting with us last year who hasn't killed a deer yet. This year he sent in for the reduction hunts with us. We were lucky and drew the late hunt at Versailles. The area we drew we are familiar with and waited until yesterday to do a quick scouting trip. After finding places and having backup places in mind we came home and got ready. I put dad and Matt, our buddy, in the two most likely places that deer were probably going to be seen and I took the scraps. We were the 5th truck in line at 330 this morning, 2nd truck in the parking area, and in our spots by 610am. As expected we had guys walking all over us up until daylight. With it being public land I kind of expect it. It was a pretty slow morning with not really that many shots. It all changed about 835 or so when I heard a twig snap to my right. I turn to look and I see a buck. I'm not picky on these hunts, so I immediately decide I'm shooting. I can see he has a taller rack and that's about it. He was sneaking along into a briar patch. As I'm standing up to get a shot my boots made a squeal on my treestand and he stops and pinpoints me. Thankfully I had plenty limbs breaking me up and he couldn't make me out. I was watching him through my scope waiting for him to take about 2-3 more steps into an opening and when he finally did I took the shot. He dropped like a ton of bricks, but tried to get back up. I put 2 more follow up shots in him due to having 3 or 4 guys pretty close to me. I didn't realize what he was until I walked over to him and there was no shrinkage, but major growth. I'll get better measurements when I get the cape back later this week. For taking the scraps I think I made out pretty good.
